Miss SA Zozibini Tunzi’s natural crown sparks a hair-raising debate

0

Here sits the crown, beautifully so on my kinky coarse hair. I hope I make South Africa proud,” said Zozibini Tunzi in her first official Instagram post as Miss SA 2019.

Since the 25-year-old from the Eastern Cape won the coveted title on Friday, much has been made about the fact that she wore her hair naturally for the pageant. She’s been praised for doing so by the public and celebrities alike.

Zozibini Tunzi

“This day finally came! Natural African hair under that Miss SA crown and heading to the world stage. You are breathtaking!” wrote radio presenter Azania Mosaka on Twitter. While singer Lira tweeted,”Ooooh what a beauty! Goosebumps. Our newest #MissSA is rocking her natural hair”.

“I’m happy. I’m emotional. A South African beauty with short natural hair won the #MissSA2019 crown,” said actress Florence Masebe on Instagram. While not all social media users were complimentary about her hairstyle, things started to get heated when it was insinuated that it might have had something to do with her win.

It was pointed out that Tunzi entered Miss SA for the first time in 2017 with flowing faux locks and failed to progress past the semi finals. Yet now, with short natural hair, she clinched the crown.

Zozibini Tunzi

Several Twitter users disagreed with this theory with one commenting “… you are basically reducing Zozibini’s success to just hair choice. Saying she won because she has short natural hair is bull”.

Another added, “People are annoying hey … her win became about black women’s hair as if she didn’t deserve it … they don’t realise how much they are taking away from her shine.”

As if preempting the fact that her hairstyle would be a major talking point should she win, Tunzi wrote an Instagram post about it a week before the pageant’s grand finale.

“Before going natural I was scared of not being beautiful because of the misconception I had of what beauty is, mainly because beauty was never presented to me as someone who has my kind of hair,” she said. As the new Miss SA she’s helping to change that, and teach the world the same “important lesson” that she learnt.

As Tunzi put it, “I learnt that … women are not one dimensional and therefore you cannot box their beauty. We all come in different shapes, sizes and shades, with natural hair and weaves. Regardless of what we choose, we are all fantastic beasts.

Sbahle Mpisane opens up about reclaiming herself one year after car crash

0

Friday marked one year since Sbahle Mpisane was involved in a car crash that nearly claimed her life and resulted in her spending months in hospital. Sbahle lost control of her car during the early hours of August 9, 2018 on Victoria Embankment in Durban. Paramedics had to use Jaws of Life to remove her from the wreckage.

And, even though its been a long and tough journey to recovery, Sbahle learnt to push herself to reclaim her life.

Sbahle Mpisane

Taking to Instagram, Sbahle shared how suffering from amnesia after the accident almost made her forget that she’s an intellectual woman and made her question if could rise above her injuries.

“My traumatic injuries on both my feet made me question if I could steer myself in any direction I choose. None the less, a few understood and pushed me to additionally reclaim myself and relook at my directions.”

She added that not all pieces were together yet, however, in the end, they will be “cheek by jowl”. Giving others motivation Sbahle said, “Promise me you’ll always remember that you’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem and smarter than you think!

Sbahle Mpisane

Sbahle also shared on Instagram Live that looking back on the day she graduated made her emotional.

She, however, added that things do turn out for the best for people who made the best out of the way things turned out. Just a few weeks ago, Sbahle celebrated taking her first few steps without crutches since the accident.

Sbahle explained on Instagram that it took her an hour to take those first three steps and that it was extremely painful, but she had promised her mom that she would do it for her. She said it was a case of mind over matter.

Sbahle Mpisane

“Our body can withstand almost anything. It’s your mind that needs the convincing. For the past couple of months, without much success, I’ve been attempting to at least take one step. Yesterday my mum managed to make me take three steps, and it took a whole hour,” she added.

One female musician who is warming the hearts of many people is the elegant Yamikani Janet Banda. She is famous under the alias Lady Zamar. The songstress is taking the music industry by storm, and despite being new in the industry, she is making other artists have shivers. Her rich voice matched with her genius lyrics have made her the talk of the South African media.

Lady Zamar

The singer responded to her haters by claiming that she will dress as she pleases. Lady Zamar would do well to avoid Twitter right now because everybody is talking about her outfit choice again – and they’re not being flattering!

Lady Zamar

The Collide singer was a guest performer on the most recent episode of Idols SA. This weekend, South Africa said hello to the 2018 top 10 contestants for the first time. To mark the big occasion, Lady Zamar was invited to perform for the audiences both in Pretoria and the millions tuning in from home.

Lady Zamar

Lady Zamar has been criticised for her “laid back” and often colour-clashing dress sense in recent months, whether she’s dressed in casual clothing (remember that sporty outfit from August?) or she’s dressed for big events.

I haven’t undergone any cosmetic surgery and never thought of it,” she said, I think people are allowed to make any changes they want on their body if it’s by diet, gym or surgery who cares, but i personally choose to hit the gym and sculpt.

Corazon Kwmboka

Kwamboka has been lying low like an envelope after parting ways with her Italian bae. The sexy lawyer during the interview said, she’s now focusing on her gym wear Genio sport. She said Corazon, who is a gym guru went ahead to say.

Corazon Kwmboka

Being a lover of sport and gym and a curvy size 16/18 girl, my main struggle was finding sport wear that fit me, the international brands don’t cater for us and the available local brands were either very low quality, see-through or low waist(which poses a challenge when you have to be active jumping or running at the gym. for this reason, i decided to source the best tailors and the best fabric and design and came up with my brand of sport wear, genio. it caters for women of all sizes, they are all high waisted, anti-cellulite and non-transparent at the same time super stretch.

Corazon Kwmboka

Corazon Kwamboka, the true definition of beauty and brains advised women struggling with weight loss not to stress. She said: do not struggle. take it one day at a time and even if you don’t see any changes just keep on, focus on being.

She made an example about Cassper taking of his shirt and being glorified for it.

Nadia Nakai

She added that when a man does that no one says he’s using s-e-x to sell his music. “No one tries to discredit you because you come out looking s-e-xy. Whereas with a woman they’re like she’s selling sex and she’s not actually a musician. She’s just this and that,” she said.

Nadia said this ‘pull her down syndrome’ is mostly perpetuated by other women. It’s actually other girls that are breaking down other girls.

“I got to a point where I am no longer fighting it. I am always going to live my truth and know the type of person I am as an individual.

Nadia Nakai

The way I dress doesn’t define me. It doesn’t mean I deserve to be r@ped. It doesn’t mean I deserve to be objectified. The issue is not about the way I dress. The issue is about the men that make these decisions to beat women, rape and treat them like trash,” she said.

Nadia took the chance to address social media users – especially women who were bashing her. “You shouldn’t be saying that to another girl because you’re literally fuelling that mindset that men think that they can treat you a certain way depending on how you dress,” she said.
