K.O. on why artists left his label

0

This year, rapper K.O lost the last two rappers left at his record label, Skhanda World out of the five he had signed. A few weeks ago, rappers Loki and Roiii announced they left to pursue their solo careers

Real name Ntokozo Mdluli, K.O. confirmed to ZiMoja that there are no artists left at his stable. “As it stands, I am the only arts left,’ he said. “We had gotten into a partnership with Universal Musi Group (UMG) as a joint venture. They were fronting 50% of everything that had to do with the business, and they wanted to see results but unfortunately, some of the music and stuff that came out was not yielding the results that both anticipated,’ he said. He, UMG, and the artists decided to part ways amicably.

K.O

We felt maybe the artists would do well at another label. We didn’t want to hold anyone back from thriving elsewhere and that is what happened.’ K.O. says his partnership with UMG is still there however, the lineup of artists he had did not match the vision. “They were not bringing the investment. So, Just Bheki, MaE, MrX, and Loki, Roiii were the last ones to leave.’ He also felt with his new business ventures he would not be as present as he would like to be.

This is not the first time K.O. has had to let go of artists and start afresh. A few years ago, he signed the likes of Nomuzi Mabena, Kid X, and MaE, under Cashtime Life, but they also left the label. He explained that when he started the label, he wanted to create a platform that would help him and other young artists to get their dreams. “Although plenty of people warned me against embarking on that journey, my selfless and holistic business approach was meant to sustain Teargas after all of its success.

K.O

He partly blames himself for the artists leaving his label. “I usually sign artists because I like them, based on my preference, and believe that I can convince everyone to like them too or that I can actually get them to greater heights,’ he said. “In most cases, we do well, but then when it comes to me contributing to the music and they refuse to take my advice or a certain direction, then I feel like I am dictating.’ But K.O. says he understands its business. “It’s not personal. It’s all business and requires results and if things don’t work out, we move on to the next thing.’ K.O said he is now investing in himself and his other business ventures.

K.O

But he will not wallow in the money lost from signing artists. “I can’t sit there and complain about time and money wasted, it’s business. You need to be frugal with money and make wise decisions. Despite some of the efforts, the financial knock and PR aspect was not good,’ he said. “But it was all about opening doors for people. Even if that artist who left became the biggest thing, I was the spark, and it will make me proud. That feeling is bigger than the money in my pockets. So, for the culture, I have no regrets.

Two months ago, K.O. embarked on another new business venture and opened his store SWave in Rosebank, Johannesburg. K.O. added that running a store is no childs play. “Fashion has always been dear to my heart, and I got into it through my own brand Skhanda World, and my collaboration with Studio 88. I was just easing my way into one day having my own space, like this.’ Including himself, K.O. has eight employees. “It feels good to be creating employment and feeding families.’ At the end of March, he will be releasing a winter clothing range and soon after a children’s range.

Last year, he was nominated for seven categories at the Metro FM Awards which were held in his hometown of Mpumalanga, and he did not win a single one. But he is still bitter as he believes it was an honour to lose to his late friend AKA who was assassinated in February 2022 outside a Durban restaurant. “I changed my life from a kid from Mpumalanga who couldn’t speak for himself and didn’t come from a rich home to the big city with a dream. Today I don’t only have a nice house, decent cars, and clothing line, and record-breaking singles like Sete, and Caracara, but I’m busy almost every weekend. When I see people screaming my songs, it’s better than getting some random awards.’

K.O

On Friday, he dropped his Afro-pop-inspired single titled You which is far from his usual style. “On Valentine’s Day we will then drop the music video,’ he says. He is expecting some people to love the new sound and others to hate it. “There are gonna be two schools; some will completely hate it because they were expecting me to just rap, rap, rap and I am doing nothing of the sort. They and others will love it and will get the vision. It’s almost me channeling my inner Robbie Malinga, Mbongeni Ngema, and Hugh Masekela singing, but in an urban and cool way. You’d expect older people to sing. I am expecting a lot of criticism,’ he laughed. “I know a lot of people will hate it. I trust my genius. It’s not seasonal and nothing trendy but will remain for a long time. It’s Aro-Pop, it’s authentically South African, and doesn’t sound forced.

Aston Villa 1-2 Manchester United

0

Aston Villa 1-2 Manchester United. Scott McTominay’s 86th-minute header gave Manchester United a priceless victory at Aston Villa as they fight for Champions League qualification.

United appeared to be clinging on for a point as Villa created a succession of chances after Douglas Luiz cancelled out Rasmus Hojlund’s first-half strike.

But McTominay settled a thrilling contest when he got in front of Matty Cash and rose to meet Diogo Dalot’s right-wing cross.

United manager Erik ten Hag punched the air in delight as his side moved to within five points of their hosts, who remain fifth, and six adrift of Tottenham.

It was the Red Devils’ fourth successive victory in all competitions – their best run of the season.

The result was harsh on Villa, though. They were thwarted on numerous occasions by United keeper Andre Onana, and despite the urgings of the home support were unable to draw level a second time.

In the high-ability world of elite sport, confidence plays such a key part.

When Hojlund lined up for the reverse fixture between these sides on 26 December, he was yet to score a league goal and his overall contribution was coming under major scrutiny.

Wind the clock forward seven weeks and the 21-year-old is the second youngest player in Premier League history to have scored in five successive games, behind only Nicolas Anelka.

The Dane had already passed up one opportunity, created for him by Alejandro Garnacho, when he was given another by Harry Maguire.

The finish was not a tricky one, with Hojlund unmarked and only six yards out. But he needed a striker’s instinct to be in position to take advantage of Ollie Watkins’ failure to react to the possibility of Maguire heading Bruno Fernandes deep corner into the danger zone.

Hojlund now has 11 goals in all competitions and is on the kind of run Marcus Rashford was last season as he propelled United towards the top four.

After they dropped so many needless points over the first half of the campaign, it is going to take more than a single striker to steer them into next season’s Champions League.

McTominay is certainly doing his bit. Two goals to turn what seemed like a defeat against Brentford on its head, two more – including the winner – against Chelsea, and now this.

The Scotland midfielder had all the desire needed to dominate Cash in their aerial duel. Villa boss Unai Emery’s look of despair as the ball flew past Emi Martinez and into the roof of the net said everything about the importance of the goal.

With just over 20 minutes to go, as the visitors got themselves into a tangle trying to play out from the back, Watkins set off on a sprint as the ball rolled back to Onana. As the United keeper deliberated, Watkins closed in. Onana hurriedly tried to clear, Watkins blocked it and the ball rolled out for a goal-kick. The Holte End erupted.

In terms of the actual game, it was a footnote, but the action and response to it said everything about the desire of the Villa players and their connection with the fans. That has not always been a given in recent times but the supporters are understandably responding positively to the team Emery has assembled.

Such has been United’s dominance in recent meetings between the sides, Villa were attempting to record successive home league victories against them for the first time since 1977.

Had Cameroon reached the Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals, and thus denied the visitors of Onana, they might well have got it. At times, it felt like he was a one-man blockade.

John McGinn thought his vicious 20-yard effort was going in but Onana managed to tip it over the bar. Minutes later, the Villa skipper played Watkins in only for the goalkeeper to advance smartly to block at close range.

Leon Bailey thought he had left Jacob Ramsey with only Onana to beat inside the box but somehow the youngster could not collect the pass and the ball rolled through to the United keeper. Onana even denied Clement Lenglet with a magnificent reaction save in the moments before Luiz finally found the target with an instinctive close-range effort.

At that point it seemed if anyone was going to win, it would be Villa.

But McTominay provided a sickening conclusion from their perspective. They have slipped out of the top four, and three home defeats in a row show Villa Park is no longer the fortress it has been for most of this season.

The fans are still with their team, though. And that could take them a long way.

West Ham United 0-6 Arsenal

0

West Ham United 0-6 Arsenal. Arsenal secured their biggest Premier League away win with a ruthless dismantling of West Ham to move back to within two points of leaders Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta’s side stay third but are now behind second-placed Manchester City only on goals scored after wiping out a six-goal deficit on a stunning afternoon at the London Stadium.

It is West Ham’s heaviest home Premier League defeat and joint-heaviest of all time, along with a 8-2 loss against Blackburn in 1963-64.

An extraordinary first half saw the Gunners race into a 4-0 lead, thanks to goals from William Saliba, Gabriel, Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard, leaving the home side stunned.

Saka waltzed through a static Hammers defence to score his second after the break, before Declan Rice made it 6-0 with a rocket of a shot from distance against his former club.

After the jubilation of last weekend’s win over Liverpool, Arsenal produced another statement performance to restate their title credentials.

It is their joint-biggest margin of victory in an away league match and their first since a 7-1 win over Aston Villa in December 1935.

They had to wait 32 minutes to break the deadlock, when Saliba rose highest at the far post from Rice’s corner to nod home from close range.

West Ham had been defensively disciplined up to that stage, but completely lost their shape as Arsenal ran in three more goals before the break.

West Ham United 0-6 Arsenal

The second came from the penalty spot when Saka ran on to a ball over the top and was fouled by goalkeeper Alphonse Areola. The England international, who missed from the spot against West Ham last season, converted this time for his 50th Arsenal goal.

Gabriel made it 3-0 with another close-range header from Rice’s free-kick, before Trossard curled superbly into the top corner in first-half stoppage time.

The pace of the game dropped after the break but Arsenal’s dominance remained, with Saka collecting Martin Odegaard’s pass inside the area before rifling into the near post.

Rice then fired in a superb sixth from distance, though the England midfielder refused to celebrate on what was his second appearance back at his old club since his £100m summer move.

West Ham fans streaming out of the London Stadium before half-time will be a worrying sight for David Moyes, who has come under pressure from some sections of the fanbase this season.

The Hammers were looking to beat Arsenal three times in the same season for the first time in 99 years, after winning 3-1 at home in the EFL Cup in November and then 2-0 at the Emirates the following month.

But the Hammers have yet to win since that December night in north London, meaning they have begun a calendar year winless in their first seven games for the first time since 1997.

This game was lost in a disastrous 15-minute spell before half-time as West Ham’s previously stubborn defence disintegrated, with the half-time break failing to inspire any sort of response.

With Moyes’ contract expiring at the end of the season, a result from a limp performance like this will only add to the uncertainty about his future.

The Scot will be hoping West Ham’s next four games, all against sides currently in the bottom seven, offer an opportunity to kick-start their faltering season.

Date for elections to be declared after SONA: Magwenya

0

South Africa’s upcoming general elections will be declared by President Cyril Ramaphosa, after the State of the Nation Address (SONA).

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya made the announcement in Parliament, ahead of SONA. Many have predicted that the President will make the announcement during the SONA on Thursday evening.

The Electoral Commission is done with voter registration drives and the focus now shifts to the Union Buildings for the elections to be declared. South Africans still have an opportunity to register to vote online or at IEC offices until the proclamation of the election date.

Magwenya says it’s not true that the elections will be declared during the President’s last SONA of the sixth democratic administration.

“President Cyril Ramaphosa will announce the elections date within 15 days after the State of the Nation (SONA). Thereafter the date will be proclaimed,”

Meanwhile, political analyst Professor Lesiba Teffo says President Ramaphosa has failed to live up to expectations. He says Ramaphosa has been indecisive and many don’t know what he stands for.

“He didn’t live up to expectations, I think in a small way he should be disappointed in himself, what he has reached, a stage where people are assessing him in the manner he does, even his closest allies probably whispered in his ears, can you up your pace and be decisive.
