The father of Skeem Saam actress Amanda Manku confessed to ordering a hit on his mother-in-law and that his wife was shot and killed “accidentally”. William Manku, a police captain, appeared alongside his police official girlfriend, Sergeant Nonhlahla Ngubo and an alleged hitman, David Khoza, at the Magatle Magistrate’s Court in Zebediela, Limpopo for bail hearing.
The trio are facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder, two counts of murder and obstruction of justice. Accused number one, Khoza (40) has abandoned his bail application while accused number two Manku (53) who has been in the police force for more than 30 years and accused number three Ngubo (42) have applied for bail. The three were arrested a few weeks ago in connection with the double murder of Manku’s mother-in- law, Lettie Maphuthuma (70) and his wife Gladys Manku (45), who were shot and killed while on their way from fetching water from a community tap at Makgophong village in May 2021.
Limpopo spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said during cross-examination of the investigating officer in the matter, the officer told the court that Manku confessed that he wanted his mother-in-law dead. “He said that he was looking for a person to kill his mother-in-law. When he found the people, he drove with them to show them where the mother-in-law lived and he drove back to Gauteng. Malabi-Dzhangi said the hitmen went back to Limpopo on Manku’s instruction to kill his mother-in-law.
“The men called Manku after they had finished their work but they had killed two instead of one. He told them that one of the women was his wife and they told him they had to kill her as she ran away after her mother was shot and they thought she was going to tell the community and they would be caught,” she said. Dzhangi further said that Manku made a payment to the inkabis after the murder. Dzhangi also said there was domestic violence cases that Amanda’s mother had opened against her husband in the past. The bail hearing will continue this morning.
