South Africans on social media are losing hope that the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial will ever be solved. This comes after reports that one of the defence lawyers in the case, Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu, is facing a number of charges. According to the SABC, Mngomezulu faces charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, contravention of a protection order, and resisting arrest. He represents accused number one and two (Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya and Bongani Ntanzi) in the high-profile trial.
The public broadcaster revealed that Mngomezulu’s charges date back to November 2022 and the complainant is his wife, Dumisile Sebentile Mngomezulu.
The couple reportedly work together on the Meyiwa case and although the wife tried to withdraw the charges, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) refused to withdraw. NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane confirmed that there was an ongoing case against Mngomezulu.
“There’s a judgment that was delivered in December 2023; in that order, the high court ordered the NPA to consult with Mngomezulu and then after draft a memorandum indicating whether prosecution will continue or stop the proceedings.” The matter is before the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court.
