Steve Harvey Not Impressed With Today’s Young Generation

0

Steve Harvey shared a quote from an author named Nuri Muhammad, which he says changed his whole perspective on life and relationships.

“He said, ‘Other than your relationship with God, who you choose to spend the rest of your life with is the single most important decision you will ever make because your other half will either be your better half or make you half of what you could be.

Steve Harvey

“She will either inspire you to greatness or reduce you to mediocrity’.”

Harvey went on to add that a woman is like an elevator button, “They can take you up or down.”

After sharing his perspective from a male point of view, Harvey also clarified that he believes it goes both ways. After Sharpe shared how he once paid for his own divorce, Harvey interjected and explained what he feels is wrong with today’s generation.

Steve Harvey

“These young boys today (be like), ‘What does she bring to the table’. What the hell do you mean, man? What does your ass bring to the table? Did you get a woman that can come to the table that can make another you?

What else does she need to slide up to the table with? What about your job? What happened to men who were supposed to be responsible?”

He then explained how it’s impossible for a man not to need a woman and that women are becoming increasingly independent because they are forced to because men aren’t taking care of them.

Steve Harvey and Thando Thabethe

“The system of marriage is still good. The system of a man taking care of a woman that’s really how it’s supposed to be. All the rest of it is bullsh** man.”

This particular clip has been making rounds on Twitter with many criticising Harvey’s views as being outdated and misogynistic. Some have also pointed to his complicated history with women.

“He literally cheated on his ex-wife while she was pregnant, and left her and his biological kids with no money, so he can go to his side chic,” one tweep commented.

“And raise his side chics, children, from another man ???????????????????????????????? We never forgot!!!”

Over the past few weeks, prominent actresses and media personalities have flown the South African flag high with some major moves.

It started with Nomzamo Mbatha continuing on her ascension to international stardom by starring in “Assassin”, a thriller/fantasy film about a private military operation engaging in deadly cover missions.

Nomzamo Mbatha

The film, which came to screens on March 31, sees Mbatha star alongside famed US actor Bruce Willis. It’s a particularly eye-catching project as it marks Willis’s final film before his retirement due to his being diagnosed with aphasia, a condition which his family recently announced has now progressed into frontotemporal dementia.

This career highlight comes just two years after Mbatha caught her big break with a role in the massive, internationally syndicated film, “Coming 2 America”.

Last week, the 32-year-old also announced that “Shaka Ilembe”, a TV series that she not only starred in but also executive produced, will be released on June 18.

Nomzamo Mbatha

“Your Sunday nights will never be the same,” she said.

Mbedu showcased the power and reach of her brand when renowned fashion house Christian Dior unveiled her as the face of a campaign for Gris Dior, its leading gender-neutral fragrance under the La Collection Privée.

Titled “Dare in Gris Dior”, the campaign sees the brand group several other stars from around the world, including Jenna Ortega, Joseph Quinn, Maya Hawke, and Fai Khadra.

Last year, the two-time International Emmy nominee earned her biggest break yet when she made her feature film debut alongside Viola Davis on the critically acclaimed Hollywood blockbuster, “The Woman King”.

Nomzamo Mbatha

Not only did this role see her receive the award for best female lead in a new scripted series at the Film Independent Spirit Awards, it also saw her listed among the New York Times’ Top 10 Best Actors of 2022.

Late last year Mbedu took to “The Daily Show” to share with fellow South African trailblazer Trevor Noah that she was working on several projects, most notably a production deal she has with Paramount Plus that’ll see her work on her own productions.

“I think, more than anything, I want to create the stories that are innately in us,” she said.

“Because growing up and being in the industry you believe that you can be anything until you get to the industry and they tell you no you can’t, and so what are those stories?”

She said the deal would see them focus on health, climate, and equity as part of their social impact initiative that they’ll be taking to South Africa and Africa.

“And so those are stories that will transform people’s thinking because from my understanding and what I’ve experienced back home, they’re very keen on commissioning projects that will encourage destructive behavior but aren’t necessarily teaching people how to transform and empower their lives.”

In the midst of this, Mbedu announced on Instagram that she’d signed a deal that would see her working on Stranger Comics’ “Tales of Asunda” afro-fantasy series.

“At some point this year I remember sitting in my apartment thinking working on a comic and working towards an anime is a must-happen for me. In this lifetime. It will be a lot of hard work but it will be worth it.”

Thuso Mbedu

Mbedu went on to unveil the cover art of the first comic book on Instagram. The story follows the lead character, Niobe, as she finds herself “thrust into an ethical conflict when she encounters a tribal society that selects its new leader in a fight to the death.”

According to press notes, she then finds herself up against generations of traditional customs or facing the idea of keeping herself hidden away from the world of Asunda.

Actress Charlize Theron, herself no stranger to making global moves, has shared a snap with Mbedu when the two linked up in West Hollywood to celebrate the Oscar winner’s Africa Outreach Project, which is a non-profit that advances and invests in the health, education, and safety of young people living in Southern Africa.

“To witness the massive change that Charlize and the team have done was not only awe-inspiring but it also filled me with so much hope,” Mbedu said.

“To the youth of South Africa: you matter — more than your circumstances will let you believe. We believe in the power that rests in you and be encouraged as there are people who are actively fighting for you.”

Elsewhere, Bonang Matheba, who has been frequenting the US over the past few years, returned to reality television after it was announced that she is among the new personalities enlisted in the second season of Netflix’s original reality series “Young, Famous & African”, which is set to launch on Friday, May 19.

Thuso Mbedu

“Queen Sono” actress Pearl Thusi, who’s also no stranger to the international scene, has been in Los Angeles for several weeks working on new international projects she’s yet to reveal.

If what her peers are achieving is anything to go by, we can expect more international success to celebrate soon.

Ed Sheeran Battles Marvin Gaye Copyright

0

Ed Sheeran took the stand for the first time this week to defend against allegations that he copied elements of Marvin Gaye’s 1973 hit “Let’s Get It On” when producing his own 2014 hit song, “Thinking Out Loud”.

Heirs of Gaye’s collaborator and “Let’s Get It On” co-writer Eric Townsend sued Sheeran in 2017, alleging copyright infringement over similarities in the two songs’ chord progressions.

Ed Sheeran

The trial has been delayed several times since, but as it gets underway in New York District Court, experts are watching for a ruling that could set a new copyright precedent in the entertainment industry.

A loss for Sheeran could expand the commonly understood boundaries of music copyright and mean more claims brought against popular artists who have built off existing songs to create something of their own, said Luke McDonagh, an assistant professor of law at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

ed sheeran

“The stakes are quite high.“

Here’s what you need to know about the trial.

Why is Ed Sheeran in court?

Sheeran is in court because heirs of Eric Townsend, who largely wrote “Let’s Get It On” and owned two-thirds of the royalties for the song when he died in 2003, are accusing the British artist of infringing on the copyright.

ed sheeran

Townsend’s daughter, sister, and the estate of his former wife claim in their complaint that Sheeran, in “Thinking Out Loud”, copied important musical elements of “Let’s Get It On” and unjustly profited from it. They are seeking unspecified damages.

Sheeran and his lawyers say it’s normal for songs of certain genres to have similarities, and that one artist cannot claim ownership over a commonplace musical element. They argue that the two songs are distinct.

What part of “Thinking Out Loud” do plaintiffs claim is copied from “Let’s Get It On”?

Townsend’s heirs accuse Sheeran of copying “harmonic progressions, melodic and rhythmic elements” that are the “heart” of “Let’s Get It On”.

Because “Let’s Get It On” was written before 1978, the sheet music – and not a sound recording – was submitted to the Copyright Office.

That meant only certain elements of the song were protected by copyright, said McDonagh.

ed sheeran
ed sheeran

The case mostly revolves around a chord progression that is found in “Let’s Get It On” and “Thinking Out Loud” – but also, as Sheeran and his lawyers have argued, in many other pop songs.

Lawyers for the plaintiff played the court a video on Tuesday that shows Sheeran performing a medley of “Let’s Get It On” and “Thinking Out Loud” at a concert.

The complaint claims that the video is evidence that Sheeran himself “acknowledged the musical import of Let’s as a forebear and/or musical foundation for Thinking”.

In it, Sheeran “transitions seamlessly” between the two songs onstage.

But in court, Sheeran retorted that it was “quite simple to weave in and out of songs” that have similar musical elements, according to the Associated Press.

The jury would have to decide if the two songs are substantially similar and whether the elements they had in common were protected under copyright law, Sabine Jacques, an expert in music copyright at the University of East Anglia, said.

To establish copyright infringement, it was not enough to prove that the songs sounded similar, Jacques said: “The plaintiffs must establish that the defendant actually copied the plaintiff’s work.”

What has Sheeran said about the creation of “Thinking Out Loud”?

Sheeran says that he and his co-writer Amy Wadge did not copy Gaye’s song. He argues that many pop songs use the same chord progression he is accused of copying in “Thinking Out Loud”.

“You could go from ‘Let it Be’ to ‘No Woman, No Cry’ and switch back,” Sheeran testified on Tuesday during the trial, according to Reuters.

“If I had done what you’re accusing me of doing, I’d be quite an idiot to stand on a stage in front of 20 000 people and do that.”

More broadly, Sheeran has expressed frustration with the growing number of copyright-infringement claims brought against artists and called it “really damaging for the songwriting industry”.

“There’s only so many notes and very few chords used in pop music. Coincidence is bound to happen if 60 000 songs are being released every day on Spotify,” Sheeran said in a video last year after he won a trial in the UK over a separate copyright-infringement claim related to his 2017 hit, “Shape of You”.

What have Townsend’s heirs said?

Kathryn Townsend Griffin, Townsend’s daughter, and a plaintiff in the lawsuit spoke at the trial on Tuesday and defended her claim, though she said she had hoped it wouldn’t get to this point, according to the Associated Press.

“But I have to protect my father’s legacy,” she said. “I think Mr. Sheeran is a great artist with a great future,” she added.

The complaint lists her and the other plaintiffs as “engaged, among other things, in conducting the business of music publishing and otherwise commercially availing musical composition copyrights of the music of Mr. Ed Townsend”.

Has Sheeran been accused of copying songs before?

Yes. In 2016, he and his collaborators were accused of copying the song “Amazing” by Matt Cardle, the winner of “The X Factor” competition show, in their 2014 hit song “Photograph”.

Sheeran settled the case out of court for an unspecified sum.

In 2022, Sheeran won a case in the UK against two artists who accused him of copying the hook from their 2015 song “Oh Why” in “Shape of You”.

The judge said there were “similarities between the ‘OW (Oh Why) Hook’ and the ‘OI (Oh I) Phrase’” but that there were “also significant differences”, and concluded that Sheeran “did not subconsciously copy ‘Oh Why’ in creating ‘Shape’”.

In the UK case, Sheeran had to convince only one judge, said McDonagh. In New York, he would have to convince a jury.

What other lessons can we learn from other copyright infringement cases?

The case has similarities with a 2015 legal dispute involving another of Gaye’s songs, “Got to Give It Up”, said Hayleigh Bosher, a senior lecturer in intellectual property law at Brunel University London.

What other lessons can we learn from other copyright infringement cases?

The case has similarities with a 2015 legal dispute involving another of Gaye’s songs, “Got to Give It Up”, said Hayleigh Bosher, a senior lecturer in intellectual property law at Brunel University London.

In that California case, artists Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams were found to have infringed the copyright of “Got to Give It Up” in their controversial hit song, “Blurred Lines“.

The jury found that “the feel and vibes of the song” were copied, Bosher said, and Thicke and Williams were ordered to pay members of Gaye’s family more than $5 million in damages.

A judge also awarded them 50% of future royalties from “Blurred Lines”.

ed sheeran
ed sheeran

The outcome shocked many experts and “seemed to change the game” because the two songs’ melodies, lyrics, and basslines were different, “but there was nonetheless a groove that was similar”, said McDonagh.

This more expansive understanding of music copyright set a precedent and caused a “marked increase” in copyright complaints against artists, he added.

Ever since US courts have been trying to roll back that precedent, McDonagh said, with some artists accused of copyright infringement winning on appeal.

But “if Ed Sheeran loses here, it could open that can of worms again”.

Separately, there was a 2016 ruling upheld in 2020 in which members of Led Zeppelin were cleared of copyright infringement for “Stairway to Heaven”.

Bosher said that in that case, “the court specifically stated that a scale or commonplace chord sequence should not be protected by copyright”.

The question was whether the New York court would follow “the Blurred Lines or Stairway to Heaven approach” in ruling on the complaint against Sheeran, she said.

“If it is found to be infringing, we will continue to see cases like this escalating,” Bosher said, “but if it is not, then we may see a rebalancing of the scope of what copyright protects in music”.

TNS Talks About New Single, “Zodwa Wabantu,” And Upcoming Album

0

TNS is gearing up to release his new project, “Phupholethu,” which is a follow-up to his debut album, Madlokuvo, which cemented his name as one of the leading South African producer DJs. The all-round musician allowed Zalebs to have an interview with him discussing his new single, and the upcoming album, and in between shared his experience as a new father and partner to his “baby mama.”

TNS

The musician’s biography explains his humble beginning by stating that, “Nkazimulo “TNS” Ngema is a Durban-based musician who is originally from Emandeni, KwaZulu-Natal. TNS is a house music producer, vocalist, and songwriter. In his youth, he made the decision to focus on his music career by deciding to move to Kwamashu to further his dreams. Over the years, TNS has created a name for himself through his music production and signwriting skills.”

His big break came in 2017 when the musician helped in producing Prince Kaybee’s summer hit, “Club Controller,” which also featured LaSoulMates and Zanda Zakuaza. His first offering was the 2019 release of his debut album, “Madlokuvo; King of African House,” which spawned hit songs like “Umona,” featuring Mpumi, and “Ayabulela.”

TNS

Some of his biggest accomplishments to date include, “His official single “Umona” which went on to reach Gold status and became a charting single which spent over 33 weeks in the top 100 airplay charts and generated over 7 million views on Youtube. “King Madlakovu” surpassed all expectations and lived on streaming charts for a significant amount of time, leading to the album gathering over 5 million streams worldwide.”

This past Friday, TNS released his new single, “Nyathela,” featuring Luqua. The single is one of the last singles that the musician has recorded for his upcoming album. When asked to explain why he decided on “Nyathela” as his new single, he explained that the song was recorded this month of August and it resonated so much that he set the song to be his lead single. Moreover, besides releasing the song as a single, TNS confirmed that he has already shot the visuals for the music video which is set to release “soon.”

TNS

But the road to deciding to release “Nyathela,” featuring Luqua was not all smooth sailing. The decision to release the aforementioned single follows after he had to halt the release of the first single he had initially promoted as his new single, “Zodwa Wabantu.” The song was scheduled for a Friday, 18 September 2020, release. With the music video already shot, the two endorsed a competition on social media looking for the graphic designer with the best-designed sleeve to win a cash prize.

The road to the single’s release was paved with comical anecdotes, like the fact that the two had never met until they shot the music video for the single. However, it was at the umpteenth hour, when plans needed to change.

In explaining the situation, the acclaimed producer details that there is no bad blood between him and Zodwa Wabantu. He details that the problem arose when the two parties could not agree on how much to compensate Zodwa Wabantu for having the song named after her because lyrically the song makes no mention or reference to her.

TNS

TNS explains that he is a father and the breadwinner of his nuclear family, therefore what will always take priority is fending for his loved ones. As a result, TNS opted to rename the song and will release the song as part of the album with the new name as the song’s official title.

The acclaimed producer when speaking about the upcoming album, “Phuphuletho,” explains that the album was purposefully named after his firstborn child. The album is set to detail his journey so far both in the entertainment industry and the growth he has experienced in his personal life.

In his words he states,

“When I recorded the album I was a father to Phupholethu, I was a baby daddy to Phuphu’s mother and I wrote about that for the album.”

TNS

Moreover, he reflects on the solitude in which he created the project in. On social media, he has shared images showcasing him working on songs in the studio that he has created for himself in his living room. Most of the time he states it was just him, his son, and the mother of their child at home while he worked on the album.

The album is set to be a 26-track, double-disc album with 13 tracks per disc. While he has worked with industry heavyweights like DJ Tira on the album, TNS does explain that he consciously worked with up-and-coming talent. He explains that he feels that it is his responsibility to give someone else a leg up, similar to how he was helped in the past.

While fans can enjoy the current single, “Nyathela,” with the visual’s imminent release scheduled. TNS also shared that he is scheduled to release the album for pre-order sales with a new single in November. The single will mark one of the last independent singles to be released from the album, before fans can expect the complete release of the project in January 2021.

TNS

When asked what his plans for the rest of the year are, TNS replied with a sense of joy. He explained that,

“I’m booked and busy. I will be gigging and be getting an opportunity to interact with my fans.”

The DJ echoes the sentiments of many live performers that had to stop working because of the restrictions brought on by the Coronavirus.

Before we ended the conversation, it would have been amiss to not ask him about the importance of fostering healthy relationships. The musician is one of the few musicians that live to his word when it comes to letting bygones be bygones or actually mending relationships worth saving.

Therefore in speaking to TNS about the growth he has experienced in his career, he makes it clear that what he is most appreciative of is the relationships he has managed to cultivate throughout his career. He reflects on how he has managed to maintain healthy relationships with friends, family, and fellow popular media personalities by saying,

“I always wondered what happened to the spirit of Ubuntu. Not a lot of people will understand what you go through or the fight you’re fighting but just knowing that people are in your corner always means a lot.”

“I went through a lot these past years. I was 85kg and lost almost half of that… all I needed to hear at the time, especially from people closest to me, was ‘You’re going to be alright’. Shauwn Mkhize has responded to allegations that she is involved in the Thabo Bester saga. The multimillionaire Durban businesswoman took to her Instagram stories this morning, to react to her name being dragged on Twitter.

According to News 24 Investigative Journalist Karryn Maughan, prison records that are in her possession show a list of people who were constantly in touch with the Facebook Rapist Thabo Bester.

Shauwn Mkhize aka MaMkhize

She implicated a well-known television personality, who apparently was consistent in visiting the inmate who escaped from prison.

“What has been fascinating is because we have the prison records, we have been phoning the number of people that have been visiting him and a number of people he listed as contacts. Including a well know celebrity that you and I will both know, we have seen her on the television screens,” said Karryn in an interview on Newz Room Afrika.

Shauwn Mkhize

Taking to her IG stories this morning, Shauwn Mkhize asks if she is the only female celebrity who is well-known in Mzansi.

“Bathong! Tha Simelane woke me up this morning telling me to rush to Twitter,” she said. “Guys, I just got beaten by Cape Town City yesterday my heart is sore. What does my name have to do with Thabo Bexter (Bester). Please can the white lady (Karryn) tell the country who is the well-known celebrity who is involved,” she continued.

Shauwn asks if she is the only celebrity in the country, “But guys, does this mean I am the only celebrity in South Africa?”

She then encourages people to go and buy her book, My World, My Rules and talk about that instead.

“Please just go buy my book. That is the only thing you can do for me and talk about that. Support me! Stop involving me in things I am not involved in.

Karryn said in the interview with Newz Room Afrika: “What is fascinating to me is that he seems to have done this thing where he said my name is Tom Motsepe and I am a relative of the Motsepe family but I am in prison under a fake name because my family… you know… it is a whole political thing, people can’t know who I am.” said Karryn Maughan.

“And he was heavily involved in the entertainment industry, to the extent that this 21st-century media company into which several million rands was sunk. He was able to have a gala dinner in that… you know at that entity and have a number of completely unwitting people” she continued.

Big Zulu won in the first round against opponent Uyajola 9/9 bodyguard Brian Dings. The highly anticipated fight took place on April 23. Big Zulu now aims to fight Cassper Nyovest who is the mastermind behind these matches.

After his loss, Dings told Sunday World that he feels as though the match was fixed, hence he demands a rematch.

Big Zulu

“Big Zulu is someone that I respect very much but I don’t feel the match was fair on my side. I never got a chance to warm up and I was told 10 minutes before the match that I was up next. I asked the referee why he stopped the match, and he said I was dizzy, hence he stopped the match,” Dings told the publication.

“I’m humbly asking for my rematch with good officials and good facilities. That is not a win or knockout, it is called match-fixing,” he continued.

In his previous interview with TshisaLive, Big Zulu said he implemented big changes which include abstinence from sex. He also lost some weight.

Big Zulu

“I will be fighting for the first time in boxing. I’ve been preparing by going to the gym. I didn’t choose my opponent, the people training me suggested him to me because he is big, but I have never been beaten, so I won’t start now,” he told the publication.

“I respect the advice they have been giving me. They advised me not to sleep with women while training. One of the boxers I saw at the gym is going on seven months without sleeping with a woman, and you can see by the way he moves and the way he is aggressive when he fights that it has been long since he slept with a woman.

Big Zulu

“With me I can tell the difference when I do sleep with a woman, I tend to be weak, my knees are weak, so I’m trying. Even when it comes to drinking, I try to stay away from that, perhaps I have just one drink. I’ve lost weight and it turns out the more I lose weight, the faster and stronger I become. My wish is to continue doing it because it has made me more disciplined.”
