No, he did it. He did it.”

50 Cent

50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis James Jackson III, added he believed other celebrities had failed to speak out because they had been complicit or had attended Diddy’s infamously debauched “Freak Off” parties.

“But I also didn’t participate,” he said, adding, “I also didn’t go to those parties. So a lot of the celebrity culture that you don’t hear saying anything is because they participated to a degree,” he maintained.

At least 33 dead as Helene cuts destructive path through southeastern US

0

Tropical Storm Helene brought life-threatening flooding to the Carolinas on Friday after leaving widespread destruction as a major hurricane in Florida and Georgia overnight that killed at least 33 people, swamped neighborhoods and left more than 4 million homes and businesses without power.

Helene hit Florida’s Big Bend region as a powerful Category 4 hurricane on Thursday at 11:10 pm ET (0310 GMT on Friday) and left a chaotic landscape of overturned boats in harbors, felled trees, submerged cars and flooded streets. Police and firefighters carried out thousands of water rescues throughout the affected states, including in Atlanta, where an apartment complex had to be evacuated due to flooding.

Helene came ashore in Florida with 140 mph (225 kph) winds, weakening to a tropical storm as it moved into Georgia early on Friday. As of early afternoon, the storm had been downgraded to a tropical depression and was packing maximum sustained winds of 35 mph (55 kph) as it slowed over Tennessee and Kentucky, the National Hurricane Center said. Helene’s heavy rains were still producing catastrophic flooding in the southern Appalachians, the NHC said.

More than 50 people were trapped on the roof of a hospital at midday on Friday in Unicoi County, Tennessee, about 120 miles northeast of Knoxville, local media reported, as floodwaters swamped the rural community. Rising waters from the Nolichucky River were preventing ambulances and emergency vehicles from evacuating patients and others there, the Unicoi County Emergency Management Agency said on social media, but emergency crews in boats were conducting rescues.

In western North Carolina, Rutherford County emergency officials warned residents near the Lake Lure Dam just before noon to immediately evacuate to higher ground, saying “Dam failure imminent.” In nearby Buncombe County, landslides forced interstates 40 and 26 to close, the county said on X.

The extent of the damage in Florida began emerging after daybreak.

In coastal Steinhatchee, a storm surge – the wall of seawater pushed ashore by winds – of eight to 10 feet (2.4-3 meters) moved mobile homes, the NWS said on X. In Treasure Island, a barrier island community in Pinellas County, boats were grounded in front yards.

The city of Tampa posted on X that emergency personnel had completed 78 water rescues of residents and that many roads were impassable because of flooding. The Pasco County sheriff’s office rescued more than 65 people overnight.

The U.S. Coast Guard said it had saved nine people from storm waters. Video posted online showed a Coast Guard crew pulling a man and his dog wearing life vests from the ocean on Thursday after his sailboat became disabled off Sanibel Island.

Kevin Guthrie, Florida’s emergency management director, urged residents in the affected areas to stay off the roads.

“I beg you, do not go out,” Guthrie said at a morning press briefing. “We have 1,500 search and rescue personnel in the impacted areas. Please get out of the way so we can do our jobs.”

Officials had pleaded with residents in Helene’s path to heed evacuation orders, describing the storm surge as “unsurvivable,” as NHC Director Michael Brennan warned.

In Taylor County, the Sheriff’s Department wrote on social media that residents who decided not to evacuate should write their names and dates of birth on their arms in permanent ink “so that you can be identified and family notified.”

Some residents had stubbornly stayed put.

Ken Wood, 58, a state ferry boat operator in Pinellas County, said he should have heeded evacuation orders rather than riding out the storm at home with his 16-year-old cat, Andy.

“I’ll never do that again, I swear,” Wood said. “It was a harrowing experience. It roared all night like a train. It was unnerving. The house shook.”

Down the hill from his house, the storm flooded some homes with chest-deep salt water. One house caught fire and burned down, shooting 30-foot flames in the stormy sky, he said.

“Old Andy seemed like he didn’t care,” Wood said. “He did fine. But next time we leave.”

Some of Wood’s neighbors were not as fortunate. Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said first responders were unable to answer several emergency calls from residents overnight due to the conditions. On Friday, county authorities found at least five people dead.

Two other people in Florida died, Governor Ron DeSantis confirmed. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp cited 11 storm-related fatalities in his state so far, while North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said there had been two deaths in his state.

At least 13 people had died during the storm across South Carolina, the Charleston-based Post and Courier newspaper reported, citing local officials. Helene was unusually large for a Gulf hurricane, forecasters said, though a storm’s size is not the same as its strength, which is based on maximum sustained wind speeds.

A few hours before landfall, Helene’s tropical-storm winds extended outward 310 miles (500 km), according to the National Hurricane Center. By comparison, Idalia, another major hurricane that struck Florida’s Big Bend region last year, had tropical-storm winds extending 160 miles (260 km) about eight hours before it made landfall.

Airports in Tampa, Tallahassee and St. Petersburg suspended operations on Thursday but reopened on Friday, though extensive delays were expected.

Rohingya in Bangladesh hope for renewed attention after Hasina’s ouster

0

Rohingya refugees have endured years of misery and violence in Bangladesh but last month’s overthrow of Sheikh Hasina, the country’s autocratic ex-premier, has given them fresh hope for the future.

Around a million members of the stateless and persecuted Muslim minority live in a sprawling patchwork of Bangladeshi relief camps after fleeing violence in their homeland next door in Myanmar. In 2017, Hasina was lauded by the international community for opening the borders to around 750,000 Rohingya who fled a Myanmar military crackdown that is now the subject of a United Nations genocide investigation.

But the years since have seen rampant malnutrition and regular gun battles in the camps, whose inhabitants hope that Hasina’s ouster will bring renewed attention to their plight.

“We and our children live in fear at night because of the shootings,” 42-year-old Shonjida, a Rohingya refugee who endured years of boredom, misery and violence in Bangladesh, told AFP.

Shonjida teaches at one of a few informal learning centres established for school-aged children in her camp, giving her an unsettling insight into the manifold problems facing her community.

The centres are able to cater to only a fraction of the camp’s families, whose status as refugees shuts them out of Bangladeshi schools, universities and the local job market.

Many of her students are undernourished because declining international aid has forced successive ration cuts.

And they are terrified by the sound of rival militant groups battling for control of the camps, with more than 60 refugees killed in clashes so far this year, according to local media reports.

“We want peace and no more gunfire. We want our children to not be scared anymore,” Shonjida said. “Now that the new government is in power, we hope it will give us peace, support, food and safety.”

Years of misery, violence
Hasina was toppled last month in a student-led uprising that forced her to flee into exile in neighbouring India, moments before thousands of people stormed her palace in the capital Dhaka.

The revolution brought down the curtain on a 15-year rule marred by extrajudicial killings of her opponents, press restrictions and crackdowns on civil society.

Her decision to welcome Rohingya fleeing Myanmar won her some diplomatic reprieve from Washington and other Western capitals, who otherwise issued regular rebukes on abuses committed during her tenure.

But her government’s struggles to accommodate the refugees in the following years were also the subject of regular criticism by rights groups.

It relocated at least 36,000 Rohingya to the previously uninhabited and cyclone-prone island of Bhashan Char to ease overcrowding in the camps.

Many of those sent there said they were forced to go against their will, with one refugee describing their new home to Human Rights Watch as “an island jail in the middle of the sea”.

The desperate situation in the camps also prompted thousands to embark upon dangerous sea trips to find new refuge in Southeast Asian countries, with many drowning at sea.

Refugees refuse to return home
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, who is leading an interim government ahead of fresh elections, began his tenure last month by promising to continue supporting the Rohingya.

Many refugees said they had been encouraged by the initial weeks of the 84-year-old’s administration.

“We saw on Facebook and YouTube that many of our community leaders had spoken with them and met with them,” community leader Hamid Hossain, 48, told AFP. “I am more hopeful now.”

But Yunus also said that Bangladesh needed “the sustained efforts of the international community” to look after the Rohingya.

This week he travelled to the United States and lobbied for more foreign aid for the group, with the State Department announcing nearly $200 million in additional funding after Yunus sat for a private meeting with President Joe Biden.

Yunus has also called for accelerated resettlement of Rohingya in third countries, with the prospect of refugees being safely returned to their original homes looking slimmer than ever.

The Rohingya endured decades of discrimination in Myanmar, where successive governments classified them as illegal immigrants despite their long history in the country.

Hasina’s government and Myanmar made several abortive plans to establish a repatriation scheme, opposed by refugees who did not want to return home without guarantees of their safety and civic rights.

The security situation has worsened dramatically since last year. Rohingya-majority communities in Myanmar have been the site of intense clashes between the military and a rebel army battling the country’s junta. There are killings there,” refugee Mohammad Johar, 42, told AFP. “How can we go back?

The Grammy winner long had a problem with his kids appearing on reality shows and social media. However, sources told The Sun that the mother-of-four argued that the children loved “being on TV.”

To counter this, insiders say, “Kanye is playing Kim at her own game – he’s against her putting the kids on the family reality show and on TikTok, so he’s put them on stage.

“She’s always saying they like being on TV – well, he’s hitting back and saying they like being onstage,” they claimed.

Sources also told The Sun that Kim had hired nannies and security for her kids’ outings with Kanye and his wife, Bianca Censori.

“Kim never lets the kids go away with Kanye without trusted nannies and her own security,” the bird chirped.

“There is a very tight schedule – what time they go to bed, what they eat, when they eat, how much sugar they have,” they further noted, adding, “Exactly where they go and how crowded those places are.
