Winfrey, the host of the long-running The Oprah Winfrey Show, as well as a businesswoman and philanthropist, said she never dreamed of having her picture at the Washington museum.

“Of all the dreams that I had, I didn’t even know there was a national gallery,” she said at the unveiling event, referring to her childhood growing up in poverty, after seeing the portrait for the first time. “I am living and breathing God’s dream for me this day.

Dwayne The Rock Johnson Set to Play MMA Legend In Upcoming Biopic

0

With the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes now in the rearview mirror, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is ready to get back into the studio and crank out more films that have helped make him one of the biggest stars in Hollywood today. And one of those films will be a project that Rock has been looking to do for a long time, armed with an A-list director.

Entertainment company A24 Films has announced the production of “The Smashing Machine,” a biopic based on the life of former UFC star Mark Kerr. Johnson will star in the film as Kerr, and his production company Seven Bucks Studios will serve as co-producers. The film, which takes its title from the 2002 documentary on Kerr, will be directed by Benny Safdie, who along with his brother Joshua is best known for directing “Good Time” and “Uncut Gems.

The 54-year-old Kerr was one of the original stars of MMA, joining the sport in the mid-90s after failing to qualify for the 1996 Summer Olympics in amateur wrestling. Kerr had been a successful college wrestler, becoming a Division I Champion and an All-American in 1992 while at the University of Syracuse. Among the wrestlers Kerr would face or train with were future WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle, and MMA Hall of Famer/actor Randy Couture.

Kerr’s success would transition to MMA, where he would compete for both UFC and Pride, winning the UFC 14 and 15 Heavyweight tournaments. Kerr’s career would ultimately be hindered by substance abuse issues, however, and he would retire from MMA after his last fight in 2009. Ten years later, Kerr would grant Rock and Seven Bucks Studios permission to work on a film based on him, though no movement would occur on the project till this week

Mobility Exercises to Boost Your Health and Fitness

0

When was the last time you thought about doing a mobility workout? Just as you train for aerobic endurance, strength, and flexibility, you also need to train for mobility, especially if you want to maintain a vibrant, active life.

Mobility refers to the way your joints move inside their socket. “Mobility is the ability to move your joints freely with the surrounding tissues allowing the movement to happen smoothly,” says Denise Cervantes, an ACSM-certified sports performance and fitness specialist based in San Bernardino, California. Think, for instance, the way the shoulder moves when you’re doing an arm windmill or arm circle.

It’s related, but not synonymous with, flexibility. Flexibility refers to the ability to lengthen or hold a muscle in a stretch. Mobility refers to the range of motion of your joints.

Mobility exercises tend to be more dynamic than exercises to improve flexibility, Cervantes says. Yet working on both can lead to some of the same benefits.

“If you don’t have flexibility or mobility, in time it can get harder to do simple things like getting in and out of your car, bending down to put on your shoes, or reaching up to get something out of a cupboard,” Cervantes says. And it could make training and exercise more difficult.

Take, for instance, mobility in your hips and thoracic spine. If you keep these body parts immobile too much, you may develop injuries simply due to repetitive daily behaviors, namely from excessive sitting and device use, according to a study.

How to Keep Walking With MS-Related Foot Drop
Without attention, those habits cause kyphosis, an exaggerated rounding of the back, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Immobility can also lead to poor walking mechanics. “Because of so much sitting, the hip flexors become so tight that they’re unable to open so when you walk, you’re only able to use a shortened stride,” she says. You’re then more likely to shuffle your feet as you walk when you age, your body hunched over.

The good news is that simple mobility exercises, when practiced regularly, can help prevent these issues now and slow some of the related natural issues that happen with age.

Even better? You’re never too young — or old — to start mobility training. “At all points of your life, mobility training should be part of your strength training program,” says Prentiss Rhodes, CSCS, a NASM-certified personal trainer and master instructor based in Scottsdale, Arizona.

7 Mobility Exercises to Help Your Joints
While there’s no specific guideline for how often you should do mobility exercises, the more you do, generally the more you’ll benefit.

Cervantes recommends doing mobility exercises daily. “The older you are, or the more sedentary you are, usually the more mobility work you need to do,” she says, adding that she likes to do a short mobility workout with multiple exercises before any workout she does. Or you can do them in small doses throughout the day. Most important is doing them regularly so that you maintain and improve that mobility, Cervantes says.

Here are seven mobility exercises you can try that help with your major and most-used joints:

1. Child’s Pose to Downward-Facing Dog
Kneel on floor and lower hips toward your heels, Cervantes says. Now let torso fall over knees and head fall between arms as you reach arms forward onto floor. This is Child’s pose. Hold for a few deep breaths.

Then come into Tabletop position, shifting weight forward until shoulders are over wrists, hips over knees. Flip toes under and pushing feet through floor, extend arms so hips lift, chest pushes through arms, and legs straighten. (Your body will form a triangle with the ground.) Lengthening through torso, take a few deep breaths and slowly release knees to floor, untucking toes and moving back into Child’s pose.

Repeat three times total, taking three to four deep breaths per move, Cervantes says.

2. Frog Pose to Deep Squat
Stand with feet slightly wider than shoulders, toes turned out for this exercise, Rhodes says. Sit back to lower body until thighs are parallel to floor (or as close as you can get to parallel). Hold here a second before shifting weight forward and placing hands on floor in front of you. Spread knees farther apart, as you lower yourself toward the ground, bring chest to the floor if possible. (Support yourself as needed with your arms if stretch in the inner thighs and groin is too intense.) Hold for a second before pushing back to that deep squat with toes turned out. Moving slowly, stand.

Repeat 8 to 12 times, Rhodes says.

3. Chest and Shoulder Opener
Lie face up on floor with dumbbell or kettlebell in right hand (or use a soup can if you don’t have strength equipment or find the weights too heavy), Rhodes says. Extend right arm straight above chest and left arm overhead resting on the floor by ear. Bend right leg, placing right foot on floor next to left knee. Roll onto left shoulder, letting right knee fall to floor. Now extend right leg onto floor and slowly roll hips forward and then back to the position with your right knee bent and arm still extended overhead.

Repeat 8 to 12 times, Rhodes says; then carefully roll onto back, hold weight into chest to give arms a break, and switch sides, repeating on other side.

4. Hitchhiker
Get on floor on hands and knees in Tabletop position, wrists below shoulders and knees below hips, Rhodes says. Form right hand into fist, thumb pointing up in Hitchhiker position, and lift right arm in front of you to shoulder height. Lower to start and repeat 8 to 12 times.

Switch sides and repeat.

5. Hamstring and Hip Opener
Kneel on floor with knees about hip-width apart. Step right foot forward so right knee is over right ankle and right thigh is parallel with floor. With arms to sides or hands on hips, shift weight back as you lean from hips over right foot allowing right toes to come up. (If you need some balance, place hands on floor.) Release to start and repeat 8 to 12 times, Rhodes says.

Switch sides and repeat.

6. Arm and Shoulder Circles
Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, hips and shoulders square to start this exercise from Cervantes. Relax left arm by left side as you circle right arm forward 10 times; extend your arm as long as possible to make large circles without shifting hips. Switch directions for another 10 repetitions. Switch sides and repeat.

7. Hip Circles
Lie face up on floor with legs extended on floor, Cervantes says. Bend right knee and bring it toward chest so knee is pointing toward ceiling. Draw circles — make them progressively bigger — with that knee in one direction 20 times; switch directions and repeat. Then switch sides and repeat, Cervantes says.

The Best Yoga Poses for Beginners Everyone Should Practice

0

Yoga has proven benefits for both body and mind (pets optional). There are many great reasons to add yoga to your exercise routine. Yoga improves muscle tone, flexibility, and balance, and it helps you relax and reduce stress, thanks in part to its signature pranayama breathing. Bonus: Research has also shown that yogic practices reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain; help you sleep better; and enhance overall well-being and quality of life.

Ready to give it a try? Here are eight beginner yoga poses — called “asanas” — recommended by yoga instructors.
Easy Pose — Sukhasana — to Relieve Stress
Sit cross-legged on a yoga mat with your hands on your knees, palms up. Keep your spine as straight as you can. Push the bones you’re sitting on down into the floor — your “sit bones” in yoga-speak. Close your eyes and inhale.

“This is a great pose for beginners to use as an assessment,” says Gwen Lawrence, yoga coach for a number of sports teams, athletes, and celebrities. “Just sitting on the floor gives you a perfect way to see and feel the external rotation on the legs.” This pose also boosts back flexibility and can help relieve stress.
Cat-Cow to Awaken the Spine and Ease Back Pain

Get on your mat on all fours with your hands directly below your shoulders and your knees directly below your hips. Distribute your weight equally between your hands and spread your fingers wide. Inhale and round your back, arching it up as you lower your chin to your chest; feel the stretch from your neck to your tailbone, like a cat. As you exhale, lower your back down all the way to a scoop shape as you lift your head, and tilt it back.

“Cat-Cow stretches and awakens the spine, which helps ease back pain,” says Leah Cullis, a certified yoga teacher and co-author of Power Yoga: Strength, Sweat, and Spirit. “It also opens and increases flexibility of the whole spine, neck, chest, and shoulders. I recommend repeating 5 to 10 times or more.”
Tree Pose — Vrksasana — to Improve Your Balance

Start by standing straight for this pose. Bring your hands together in the prayer position and lift them over your head. Balance on your right leg. Bend your left knee out to the left side and press your left foot to the inner thigh of your right leg, or even just your ankle. (To avoid injury, though, never press your foot into your knee.) Hold for 30 seconds. Switch legs and repeat.

“This pose helps to stretch the body long, from the heels to the tips of your fingers,” says Shea Vaughn, wellness and fitness expert and author of Breakthrough: The 5 Living Principles to Defeat Stress, Look Great, and Find Total Well-Being (and mom of actor Vince Vaughn). It will also help you improve your balance.

Downward-Facing Dog — Adho Mukha Svanasana — to Enhance Flexibility

In Downward-Facing Dog, your body forms an inverted V-shape. Start by placing both hands on the mat in front of you, palms down; your hands should be slightly in front of your shoulders. Place your knees on the ground directly under your hips. Exhale as you lift your knees off the ground and lift your buttocks and hips toward the ceiling. Push the top of your thighs back and stretch your heels down toward the floor. Keep your head down between your upper arms and in line with them, not hanging down. If you notice your lower back rounding, try bending your knees to help lengthen your back.

“Downward-Facing Dog calms the nervous system, works on overall flexibility, decompresses the spine, tones the arms, sculpts the legs, and opens the shoulders,” says Cullis. The pose is often held for five breaths between sides, or longer for more strength-building benefits. Lengthen from your wrists to your hips on your inhales, and deepen your roots from your hips to your heels with each exhale, suggests Cullis
Child’s Pose — Balasana — to Help You Relax and Unwind

From Downward-Facing Dog, simply bend your knees and lower your butt to your heels as you bring your chest toward the floor over your knees. Lower your shoulders and head to the floor. Place your arms along your sides, palms down, or you can support your head by folding your arms under your forehead. Breathe and relax for as long as you need to.

“Child’s Pose is one of the most healing yoga poses, and it’s my favorite of them all,” says Cullis. “It awakens the connection between the breath and body and sends calming energy through all the muscles. It’s an opportunity to get grounded, go inward, and to come out of your busy mind and into your body by awakening your breath from the inside out.” Child’s Pose is a great way to take a break and relax during your yoga practice, or anytime you feel tired or overwhelmed.

Baby Pigeon Pose to Open Up Your Hips
From all fours, move your right knee forward between your hands. As though you were doing a lunge, slowly straighten your left leg behind you, keeping the knee and top of the foot on the floor. Now rotate the right knee toward the right wrist and bring it down to the floor with your right calf flat on the floor and your right foot resting under your left groin. Lower your upper body over the bent leg, either all the way to the floor or resting on your elbows. Slowly inhale and exhale five times. Before you change sides, push back on your left leg to stretch the calf muscles. Repeat with your left leg bent and right leg extended.

This pose is a favorite for runners because it boosts hip flexibility and also releases the glutes and low back, Lawrence says. “If you run, lift weights, do CrossFit, or Spin, you must do this stretch to keep strong and flexible and enhance your performance,” she says. It may be challenging at first, but you’ll learn to love this pose, Lawrence promises.

Is Too Much Sitting Bad for Your Health?

0

The human body is built for movement. The ancient Greeks and Romans recognized the importance of physical activity for proper health, and modern medicine has confirmed the links between regular exercise and disease prevention. But it wasn’t until relatively recently that sitting and other sedentary behaviors emerged as threats to public health.

So-called “sitting diseases,” which are health issues linked to sitting and inactivity, are now a major area of research. And there’s ample evidence that spending too much of your time motionless — even if you exercise regularly — raises your risks for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and premature death, according to an editorial published in 2022 in BMJ. There is also evidence that it raises your risk for mental health conditions such as depression, according to a cohort study published in January 2023 in the Journal of Affective Disorders.

Our evolution and genetic makeup dictate that humans are made to move,” says Emmanuel Stamatakis, PhD, professor of physical activity, lifestyle, and population health at the University of Sydney in Australia. “While sitting motionless, our bodies and minds degenerate and age quickly, leading to chronic disease and premature death.”

Dr. Stamatakis has pushed for public health authorities to issue formal warnings and guidelines about the risks of too much sedentary time. Many other researchers in the field have done the same, according to a review published in 2019 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Also worrisome: Stamatakis says some of the more recent findings suggest that while sitting is bad, standing in one place (for example, at a stand-up desk) and other forms of inactivity may not be all that much healthier.

“Movement is the key,” he says. “Standing can be a part of a healthy activity pattern but, on its own, it is unlikely to lead to substantial benefits and cannot improve fitness.”The theory here is straightforward. Your body is built for movement, and spending too much time not moving can cause a wide range of negative health effects. That seems to be true even if you’re exercising regularlyThe bad effects of inactivity seem to be separate from the good effects of exercise,” says Edward Coyle, PhD, a professor and director of the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin. “Even if you meet the current guidelines for exercise, if you otherwise sit all day long, you still seem to be at increased risk for heart disease and death.

Current guidelines recommend that adults get at least 150 to 300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity, according to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

Dr. Coyle says exercise is still absolutely necessary and healthy. But just as exercise won’t protect you from the harms of smoking, it also can’t wholly offset the risks of spending all your nonexercise time sitting or in other sedentary behaviors.

“‘Sitting is the new smoking’ was a popular saying for a while,” he points out. “I think there’s some validity to that,” he adds, adding that smoking is almost certainly more dangerous than sitting.
