Black Thought Scared Off J. Cole After Joint Album Request

0

Black Thought is one of the most feared rappers alive (ask JAY-Z), but he doesn’t always need the power of his pen to scare off fellow MCs. During an appearance on the This Week in White Supremacy podcast, The Roots lyricist revealed that J. Cole once reached out to him about doing a joint album together, but Thought’s answer inadvertently caused the Dreamville rap star to back away.

Black ThoughtBlack Thought

“I don’t know the brother well, but he and I had talked about doing music together at one point. At the beginning of 2018, he hit me like, ‘Yo, let’s do an album,’” he recalled.

“I told him to send me some music. I told him I was with it. It wasn’t, ‘Send me some music to see if I want to do it’; it was like, ‘Let me see what you’re thinking.’

He continued: “He sent me a batch of beats and they all just felt so close to something Roots-centric. At the time, I was trying to sort of step outside of what I’d done with The Roots and I just didn’t feel like we were lining up.

Black Thought

“So I asked him to do a different batch, I gave him an explanation, and in my explanation, I think I scared him off. Maybe some of the trigger words that I was using, like, ‘I want something hard. This beat ain’t aggressive enough.’

“He wasn’t on that. He was on a peaceful journey.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Black Thought praised J. Cole for apologizing to Kendrick Lamar for dissing him on “7 Minute Drill.”

While many in Hip Hop have criticized the North Carolina native for backing out of the “Big Three” battle — including fellow Hip Hop figures like 50 Cent, Suge Knight, and Styles P — Thought called the gesture “beautiful.”

“Some of my students at NYU asked me a week ago asked me how I feel about J. Cole’s apology to Kendrick a day or so after putting out a diss record,” he said. “Though I hadn’t heard any of the music, I thought it was a beautiful thing. That was what was unprecedented.

J. Cole

“What we’ve seen, time and time again since the ’80s, are MCs going back and forth, like battling out. Sometimes they keep it to the record, sometimes it gets physical and it gets crazy.”

He continued: “What we’ve yet to see is somebody nip that in the bud, right? That’s what I felt like he was in effect doing. It just showed humility, nobility, and a sense of elevation that you don’t see too often across the board.

“When the plane’s going down, you gotta situate your oxygen mask first. He’s been on a trajectory of just that, self-revelation, and investing in himself.”

During an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe ahead of the track’s release on Friday (May 10), Ice Spice admitted that she was “nervous” about sampling Sean Paul’s 2002 hit “Gimme the Light.”

“I was nervous because we wanted to have a very authentic Y2K sample in there, and Sean Paul, he’s legendary,” she said.

“And that song alone, his ‘Gimme the Light,’ is so iconic that I was so nervous to sample it, because I’m like, ‘This isn’t going to get cleared, so what’s the point?’”

Spice remembered feeling a sense of relief when her sample clearance request was approved and praised the dancehall legend for being receptive to her homage.

“Thankfully we got it cleared. Shouts to Sean Paul. He’s so real,” she added.

“Gimmie a Light” is the latest offering from Ice Spice’s eagerly awaited debut album Y2K, which will serve as her second full-length release following last year’s Like..? EP.

The previous single “Think U the Shit (Fart)” has only further cemented the 24-year-old as a hitmaker, cracking the top 20 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs chart while amassing over 25 million plays on YouTube alone.

Named after both her birth year and the turn-of-the-millennium computer programming scare, Y2K is expected to be released later this year.

Ice Spice

Shedding further light on the inspiration behind the title, Ice Spice told Zane Lowe: “Thankfully, I had my mom, so growing up I’d see her embody the Y2K aesthetic in its truest form.

“[To me, the aesthetic is] duck nails. It’s a tramp stamp. It’s a brown lip liner no matter where you go. So thankfully I had her [my mom] as my inspo growing up. And of course, just like the internet, you feel me? Just like anyone else.”

Coi Leray dropped a Mike WiLL Made-It-produced song titled “Wanna Come Thru” earlier this year, and now the pair are gearing up to drop an entire EP together. Coi shared the cover art in an Instagram post on Thursday (May 9), rocking short shorts and a tiny top as she leans on a yellow whip.

In the caption, she revealed the project, titled Lemon Cars, will drop on May 24.

Check out the post below.

Coi Leray

Upon dropping the aforementioned “Wanna Come Thru” in January, Coi Leray announced she was entering her “grown and sexy era.”

“This song is about me on my grown and sexy,” Coi said in a statement. “Grown and sexy means being so in love with yourself — that it is one of the sexiest, maturest, grownest things that a woman can [be]. As you get older you tap into your womanhood and your femininity and I feel like you should embrace that.

“It’s feeling good for yourself; looking in the mirror and just loving yourself. 2024 is going to be my grown and sexy era. I’m taking over this year. I’ve got so much new music and a whole new side of me to get to know.”

Coi Leray

Mike Will Made-It also applauded Coi’s latest release, dubbing it a “culture-shifting record.”

“The song is just fresh and forward-pushing,” the Atlanta-bred producer said. “What I love about it is it sounds simple and easy to digest and instantly puts you in a mood. It’s the best feeling ever to be able to create a song that makes the listener feel good.”

He added: “This is hit No. 1 fasho, we have plenty more on the way.”

Coi Leray

Coi Leray’s new deal with Island Records marks her second label home following Republic Records, who she joined in 2019 following the success of buzzing hits like “By Myself” and “Huddy.”

She released two albums on Republic — 2022’s Trendsetter and last year’s Coi — while scoring a string of Hot 100 hits including “No More Parties” with Lil Durk, the Nicki Minaj-assisted “Blick Blick” and, of course, “Players.”

Ice Cube‘s BIG3 League just signed a $10 million deal as they begin transitioning their teams to home markets. Launched in 2017, the 3-on-3 league had yet to establish geographical ties to any of the teams. But beginning in 2025, there will now be cities tied to the teams – one of which will be Cube’s home of Los Angeles. And the new deal now establishes DCB Sports as the owner of the LA team.

Ice Cube

“This is a historic day for the BIG3,” Ice Cube said in a press release. “We could not be happier to entrust part of our league to Gary [LaDrido, managing partner of DCB Sports] and this seasoned group of sports investors ahead of our most important season yet. We have all-star basketball talent and millions of loyal fans around the world, and we are one of the most viewed sports programs of the summer on CBS.

“Basing our teams in home cities allows BIG3 to engage local communities and fanbases and bringing in ownership groups each with their own sports expertise, business, and capabilities beginning in 2025 will allow BIG3 to grow exponentially. I know that DCB Sports will do right by the people of Los Angeles and together, we’ll continue to change the game.”

The deal follows a failed offer to sign Caitlin Clark to the BIG3 – which Ice Cube and his fellow BIG3 co-founder Jeff Kwatinetz believe was never presented to her as her agents are allegedly in cahoots with the NBA.

In March, Cube offered the all-time NCAA leading scorer $5 million to play in his three-on-three basketball league, which would make her the first woman to do so. However, she was later picked by the Indiana Fever during the 2024 WNBA draft. Her four-year contract reportedly totals approximately $338,000 (an average of about $84,500 a year).

Ice Cube

In an open letter penned by Kwatinetz and shared on the N.W.A to a veteran’s website, the two accused the prodigy’s agents of working for the “NBA mob.”

“From our perspective, these representatives don’t seem to work for an individual client like Caitlin. They seem to work for the NBA mob, as their client list is a who’s who of NBA players.,” it read.

The public statement went on to describe the money she could have made by signing with BIG3, which would be far more than her current contract. For her part, Clark appeared to brush off the BIG3 offer soon after it went viral online.

“To be honest, I found out about the Big3 thing at the exact time you all did, and my main focus is on just playing basketball,” she said.

Ice Cube

“I honestly don’t talk about those things with really anybody. I have other people that deal with it, and they haven’t said a word to me about it. My main focus is on this team and helping us find a way to beat Colorado and hopefully win another one after that.”

Quavo has a new song with Lana Del Rey on the way – which could speak to why the unlikely twosome were spotted attending a Grammys party together earlier this year. The pair shared a snippet of the unnamed song in a joint Instagram post on Thursday (May 9), along with a photo of Lana and Quavo on a front porch with the caption, “If u come from where u come then u were born….Tough!”

“If you come to the North, I’ll show you around,” Quavo says in the intro. “Come take a ride with me. Whenever you ready, call on me.”

No release date or title has been revealed as of this writing.

Quavo

Quavo and Lana Del Rey‘s aforementioned joint appearance at a pre-Grammys party ignited dating speculation earlier this year.

In February, the “Candy Necklace” singer and “Bad and Boujee” rapper were seen cozying up together in the back of the car while arriving at a get-together at The Fleur Room in West Hollywood, California.

While they weren’t seen holding hands, the duo seemed to enjoy each other’s company as they both sported beaming smiles. After getting out of their ride, Quavo took the lead with Lana following just a few steps behind.

Quavo

Since then, Quavo has been embroiled in a battle with Chris Brown after the latter dissed him for allegedly dating Karrueche Tran.

After exchanging multiple songs back and forth, Karrueche herself weighed in on the matter – and she wants to stay out of the middle of their mess.

“I don’t feel. It is what it is. I’m living my life,” she said, in response to the question of how she felt about the diss tracks. “Working, paying my bills, taking time for myself and that’s all that matters. Whatever else is going on, I ain’t got nothing to do with it. I’m living a peaceful life. That’s all I want.”

Quavo

She continued: “I just don’t want any parts, I just want peace and happiness. I want to work and thrive.”

Diddy Demands For Sexual Assault Lawsuit To Be Dismissed Because It Was Filed Too Late

Diddy has filed a motion for dismissal of a sexual assault lawsuit filed by an anonymous accuser, claiming that she filed the suit past the required timeline. According to court documents obtained by HipHopDX, the embattled Bad Boy mogul, who “categorically den[ies]” the charges, argued that the “claim-revival” provision of the Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Law (VGM), a New York City law, is preempted by the Adult Survivors Act and Child Victim’s Act, a state law.

Diddy

Because of that, the claim is that the accuser should have filed suit by August 2021, according to an analysis by the Associated Press. Instead of an official statement, Diddy’s publicist pointed to the paragraph in the lawsuit that directly addresses the matter.

“At the top of Plaintiff’s pleading is a bolded, legally irrelevant ‘trigger warning’ calculated to focus attention on its salacious and depraved allegations,” it reads. “This stunt is intended to prominently showcase a baseless and time-barred claim, which was designed to cause the Combs Defendants unwanted publicity, embarrassment, and financial costs, so Plaintiff could extract an undeserved financial recovery from them.”

The statement continues: “Mr. Combs and his companies categorically deny Plaintiff’s decades-old tale against them, which has already caused incalculable damage to the reputations and business standing of the Combs Defendants, even before any evidence has been presented. Plaintiff cannot allege what day or time of year the alleged incident occurred, yet purports to miraculously recall the most prurient details with specificity… This case should be dismissed now, with prejudice, to protect the Combs Defendants from further reputational injury and before more party and judicial resources are squandered.”

Diddy

In her suit, originally filed in late 2023, the woman claims that Diddy, then-Bad Boy president Harve Pierre, and a third man raped her after she was plied with drugs and alcohol. The alleged incident, she says, took place in 2003 when she was still in high school.

One of the woman’s attorneys responded to Diddy’s filing by saying, “At this point, no one should take anything ‘diddy’ or his lawyers say seriously. Today’s motion is just a desperate attempt by Combs to avoid accountability for Ms. Doe’s allegations of gang rape and sexual assault. It won’t work.”

Check out part of the filing below.

Last month, Diddy argued that a different lawsuit against him should be dismissed because he couldn’t be sued for breaking laws that didn’t exist at the time.

More specifically, the motion stated that at the time of the alleged attack on Joi Dickerson-Neal in 1991, some statutes that she cites in her suit, including those around revenge porn and human trafficking, weren’t yet on the books. Dickerson-Neal claims that the rapper and producer drugged and raped her in the early ’90s, while also filming the act.

Diddy

He denied these allegations, saying through his spokesperson: “This last-minute lawsuit is an example of how a well-intentioned law [New York State’s Adult Survivors Act] can be turned on its head. Ms. Dickerson’s 32-year-old story is made up and not credible. Mr. Combs never assaulted her and she implicates companies that did not exist. This is purely a money grab and nothing more.”

In February, a producer named Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones accused the New York City native (real name Sean Combs) of sexual harassment as well as drugging and threatening him over a year.

The Game has seen that Rick Ross did not issue a response on Wax to his diss track, and the Compton rapper claimed that the former corrections officer was afraid to face off against him in the studio. Taking to his Instagram Stories on Friday (May 10), and captured by The Shade Room, The Game alleged that Officer Ricky “chicken” ed out with his failure to respond to his diss track with bars of his own.

“He wanted all the smoke a week ago,” he wrote over a picture of a Louis Vuitton punching bag. “Chicken legs can’t go bar for the bar so we going LV for LV now I guess.”

The “LV for LV” comment is in response to Ross’ video where he holds up a large Louis Vuitton-branded bowl and taunts, presumably in response to The Game’s diss, “You n-ggas must not want to eat.”

Check out The Game’s post below, and swipe to see Ross’.

The Game

Though Ross and The Game have worked together in the past, most notably on “Ali Bomaye” from The Game’s Jesus Piece album, the Compton native appears to have an issue with Rozay’s relentless trolling of Drake in his feud with Kendrick Lamar and co.

Released on Friday (May 10), “Freeway’s Revenge” finds The Game throwing some flagrant shots at the MMG mogul regarding his alleged sexual kinks, weight and health issues, and a past stint as a correctional officer.

“You 12 lemon pepper wings from a heart attack/ Akademiks, give this n-gga an Ozempic starter pack,” he raps, before referencing the aforementioned Drizzy-K.Dot beef: “This ain’t the Kendrick beef, my Drac’ sings songs/ Shots rings out, the neighbor better have his Ring on.”

The Game

The Game later accuses Ross of enjoying golden showers and claims former MMG rapper Gunplay knows where the proverbial bodies are buried: “Your baby mama told me that you liked to get peed on/ You a C.O., that’s the last time you had keys on/ And we know you treat Gunplay like he a peon/ And he knows some shit that ain’t cool for him to speak on.”

In response, the Biggest Bawse took to his Instagram on Friday (May 10) to quote a lyric from “Hate It Or Love It,” a song infamously recorded by 50 Cent and The Game back in 2005. (It should be noted, too, that neither Ross nor the Compton native is cool with the G-Unit boss.)

The Game

“Hate It or Love It The underdog on top,” he wrote in the caption — which was Fif’s line in the song — while also tagging the Rick Ross car show.

Drake has made a special request to Toronto’s news channel CP24 — let him get some sleep. The star took to his Instagram story on Saturday (May 11) and tagged the station in a message, saying that their helicopter flights over his house were keeping him awake.

Drake

“@cp24breaking news can we discuss the chopper flight times over the house cause I won’t lie I’m trying to sleep,” he wrote. “Anytime after 3 pm works great for me.”

Check the message below.

The constant chopper flights over Drake’s Toronto mansion are presumably a response to several recent incidents at the property. In the early morning hours of May 7, there was a shooting near the estate that left a security guard with serious injuries.

The following day, a man was stopped by security as he was trespassing on the property.

Law enforcement was alerted after the Canadian superstar’s security team stopped the person from entering through the front gate, following which he got into a brief altercation with those who stopped him — he claimed that he was “here to see Drake.”

Drake

“Officers were called after a person attempted to gain access to the property,” a Toronto Police Department representative told XXL. “The person was apprehended under the Mental Health Act.”

The day after that, May 9, there was another trespassing incident. The culprit allegedly got into an altercation with security before police arrived at the property, with the suspect then taken to hospital.

It was not reported what, if any, injuries the trespasser suffered that required hospital treatment.

It is not known if the three incidents are related to each other or have anything to do with Drake’s various feuds with Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, and A$AP Rocky, among others. It is also not known if Drake was at home at the time of the incidents.

The rapper’s mansion was recently used as fodder in his high-profile beef with Kendrick, with the Compton rapper using a satellite picture of the property as the cover art for his scathing diss song “Not Like Us.”

The image was peppered with several red markers, allegedly from a sex predator app. Kendrick accused the 6 God and some of his close associates of being pedophiles in the song.

These are claims that Drake denied in his response record “The Heart Part 6.”

Drake has put his Beverly Hills mansion up for sale again, a year after the first time he tried it. TMZ broke the news that the rap superstar has re-listed his 25,000-square-foot estate at an asking price of $88 million. That’s $13 million more than he paid for it when he bought it from English singer Robbie Williams in 2022.

Drake

It’s also the same price Drizzy asked in May 2023, when he first put the house up for sale. The house’s new listing says that it is “perfectly suited for grand scale entertaining and showcasing world-class art collections.”

“The main house features 7 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, formal living and dining rooms, gourmet kitchen with breakfast room, library, and 2 family rooms – 1 of which doubles as a professional screening room,” it continues, while also pointing out the “3 ensuite bedrooms for staff.

“The latest and greatest amenities include a garage for 11 cars, an elevator, wine cellar, gym, and game room. A pool/guest house with a mosaic-tiled pool and indoor/outdoor kitchen, as well as a hidden tennis court and orchard, complete this estate.”

Drake

If he manages to unload his Cali abode, Drake will be left with his (currently very heavily trafficked by trespassers) Toronto mansion and a new place in Houston. During a fall 2023 tour stop in H-Town, Champagne Papi revealed he found his home away from home.

“I want to tell you something – I’m excited I get to share this with night two — I had to make it official first. I’ve been looking for a long time trying to figure out, you know, the right place for me to live, where I belong outside of Toronto,” he began in a clip captured by a fan, to an uproar from the crowd.

“And I finally, finally after all these years found me a place in Houston, Texas,” he revealed. Concluding with a country accent he announced, “So ya’ll be seeing me around – yeah.”

Drake

A video the star posted to his Instagram at the time revealed that the property is a ranch.

“The sale is made, for sure,” he said while offering a tour of his new property in a golf cart. “They said 10 horses belong to the property and four of them are boarding horses,” added Drizzy, explaining people need a “nice place” to board their prized ponies.
