Germany is gearing up to host the Euro 2024 football championship

0

Germany is gearing up to host the Euro 2024 football championship under high security as global threats cast a shadow, but on the field, the home team will be looking to prove they are finally back in form.

Six weeks before the start of the Paris Olympics, Germany will be the centre of the European football world’s attention when the hosts face Scotland in the curtain-raiser in Munich on June 14.

While 2022 World Cup finalists France are favourites alongside England, Germany are enjoying new-found belief after wins against the French and the Netherlands in March.

The team’s young coach, 36-year-old Julian Nagelsmann, was to have left the international set-up after the tournament but in a sign of his confidence in the team he is moulding, he has signed on until the 2026 World Cup finals despite reported interest from former club Bayern Munich.

It augurs well too that Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen will be in the Europa League final against Atalanta on May 22, while Borussia Dortmund will face Real Madrid in the Champions League final at Wembley Stadium in London on June 1.

On Thursday, both Germany and France will announce their 26-man Euro 2024 squads, with England doing so the following Thursday.

As the lead of the tournament organising committee, former Germany defender Philipp Lahm said he was looking forward to a “big festival together” but admitted the tournament would be better if Germany performed well.

“It always helps when the home team is in the tournament for a long time,” the 2014 World Cup-winning captain told AFP in a recent interview. Euro 2024 takes place three years after the previous tournament, which was postponed by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hosted in countries across the continent with the final at Wembley, the 2021 edition took place in front of drastically reduced capacity.

This time around, there will be no more restrictions – and the stadiums are expected to be packed.

An estimated 2.7 million fans will attend 51 matches across 10 stadiums, culminating in the final at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium on July 14.

But even more will be outside the grounds, with each host city setting up fan zones ready to welcome the 12 million supporters expected to come to the country.

The tournament however also takes place against the backdrop of a tense global climate with major conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, making securing the event a mammoth task.

Germany has been on high alert for Islamist attacks since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in October.

An attack in Moscow, claimed by the Islamic State group, at the end of March which claimed 144 lives, had cast a further shadow over security at the tournament.

The Champions League quarterfinal first legs in Paris, London and Madrid in April were all held under close surveillance after an apparent threat made by Islamic State.

Likewise, additional security measures were in place for the ‘Der Klassiker’ match between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in March at the Allianz Arena, which hosts the opening match of the Euros.

The background is reminiscent of the lead-up to Euro 2016 in France which took place just after attacks in Paris and Brussels, including an attempted suicide bombing at the Stade de France during a France-Germany game.

Officials will however be hoping Euro 2024 will be like the 2016 edition, which took place safely in a jubilant atmosphere of celebration.

Actor Wiseman Mncube on how becoming a sangoma changed his life

0

Not many people know that celebrated actor Wiseman Mncube is sangoma. The My Brother’s Keeper star shocked many when he revealed that he accepted his ancestral calling some years ago. According to ZiMoja, the actor was speaking at the fourth Ancestors Day celebration yesterday in Muldersdrift, West Rand on Thursday, 9 May.

Also at the event were other well-known celebrities Mpho Wabadimo (who is also a sangoma) as well as actor, singer and historian Mbuso Khoza.  Mncube revealed that he does not share or openly talk about his spiritual calling because it is sacred.

 Wiseman Mncube

“It is a very emotional day for me looking back at where I came from and where I am today. If my ancestors had not been protecting and guiding me, I would not be here, alive on this earth. That is why when people gather and discuss spiritual topics, I will not engage much or argue. I know who I am and why I am here. I respect my ancestors, ” he explained. The former Uzalo actor said it was difficult to accept that he had to become a sangoma at first.

“I was a young man living my life, never thought it would happen to me. I refused and ran from it but I eventually couldn’t run away from it and went for initiation,” he said.

“I got revelations while ephehlweni (at initiation). Mncube, who is also known for his roles in The Wife and Shaka ILembe, said he has achieved a lot since accepting his gift.

 Wiseman Mncube

“I was able to do that and build my mom a house because I listened to the instructions from my ancestors. I also have a house here in Johannesburg through my ancestors. But you will never find me posting about my spirituality, but I know it is my ancestor feeding me and taking care of me. Even playing the role of UShaka is not just a job, it’s because I am called to honour those people.”

Whenever he faces challenges, Mncube said that he goes into his shrine, talk to his ancestors and prays. In 2021, Mncube spoke out about the stigmas surrounding the religious practice.

Speaking to TshisaLIVE, he said: “People are hiding. If you look at Muslims, they are respectful of their culture. They don’t hide anything about their culture, they are not ashamed. If you look at Indians, like Tamils, they have respect. Indians do it openly without shame.

“I think the reason why black people are afraid is because others think older people perform witchcraft on them. Especially if you are a sangoma, people will be afraid. There are stories that have made people afraid to be out there. You will be judged. That is how we were raised growing up.

Manchester United 0-1 Arsenal

Manchester United 0-1 Arsenal. Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League and ensured the title race will go to the final day with victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Gunners delivered an unconvincing display against a severely depleted United side but did enough to secure the win that puts them one point ahead of Manchester City having played a game more.

Leandro Trossard struck after 20 minutes when lazy defending from struggling veteran Casemiro played Kai Havertz onside and his cross was turned in by the Belgian at the near post.

United showed plenty of endeavour but suffered from a glaring lack of quality and never seriously tested Arsenal keeper David Raya, as their own hopes of European football next season faded further.

Arsenal must now hope north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur do them a favour by getting a result at home to Manchester City on Tuesday.

The Gunners host Everton in their final game of the season next Sunday, while City are at home to West Ham.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe chose to cast another eye over Erik ten Hag’s struggling side rather than travel to Wembley to watch United win the Women’s FA Cup for the first time.

It is hard to work out what Ratcliffe would have learned from watching another home defeat – other than it simply re-affirming the size of the job he has on his hands lifting this fallen football giant.

United’s squad, hardly fit for purpose when all players are available, was stripped of key assets such as captain Bruno Fernandes, who watched from the directors’ box with a pained expression.

Ten Hag, his smart suit soaked by a torrential downpour amid a thunderstorm that hit Old Trafford late on, will point to his lack of resources – and rightly so on this occasion.

But the fact United were unable to cause Arsenal keeper Raya any serious problems was a sobering lesson in the current state of the Red Devils.

Kobbie Mainoo tried to galvanise the hosts’ midfield while Alejandro Garnacho ran tirelessly out wide, but it was a tough afternoon for young striker Rasmus Hojlund, who got very little change out of Arsenal defensive duo William Saliba and Gabriel.

United are a club that needs a reboot and re-invigoration and – while this was not the day to make judgements on Ten Hag – it is becoming increasingly difficult to see how the Dutchman can be part of the new era and structure under Ratcliffe.

The elation of Arsenal’s fans at this vital win was not dampened by the storm that arrived in Manchester just before the final whistle as skies darkened and lightning flashed around the stadium.

Arsenal know Manchester City’s fate still lies in the champions’ own hands and two wins against Spurs and West Ham will take a fourth successive title to Etihad Stadium.

Mikel Arteta’s side, however, have done all they can and two hazardous-looking fixtures – away to Spurs in the north London derby and here at United, where they have suffered before – have been safely negotiated.

No matter that this was an Arsenal display lacking their usual fluency – at this stage of the season the only currency that counts is wins and the visitors did the job.

Once again Trossard made the difference with a trademark swoop at the near post ahead of Casemiro and Aaron Wan-Bissaka for the decisive moment.

Arsenal will now hope Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou is as good as his word and they can somehow raise themselves to upset City.

The Gunners still have a chance of their first title in 20 years going into the final game of the season – and they would have happily settled for that in August.

21 Savage Responds To Soulja Boy After He Attacks Metro Boomin Over Shady Tweet

0

21 Savage has come to the defense of Metro Boomin after Soulja Boy launched into a tirade against the producer over an old tweet. Back in 2012, Young Metro posted on X (then known as Twitter): “My phone rings to come to the studio with Jeezy. Yours rings to send Soulja Boy a pack of beats. Sit down.”

21 Savage

Big Draco caught wind of the over decade-old tweet on Saturday (May 11) and, in a typically profanity-laced Instagram Live, fired back at the Heroes & Villains hitmaker.

“Fuck is you talking about, Metro Groomin?” he said. “You was lit about going to the studio with Jeezy, bitch ass boy? Stop playing with me. I had a number one in 2007 when I was 17, fuck n-gga. You was still in elementary school. You was in middle school, boy.”

Soulja threw more shade at Jeezy by asking Metro: “Fuck is you hype about going to the studio with Jeezy for? Bitch ass n-gga, I was making beats for Gucci! I don’t give a fuck about no Jeezy, n-gga. I was in the studio with Guwop at 18.”

21 Savage

The “Crank That” rapper then gave the producer 24 hours to delete the tweet or, he warned, “I’ma show you how to troll a n-gga.”

……

21 Savage, who has a longstanding relationship with Metro, defended his Savage Mode collaborator by calling Big Draco’s bluff.

“Or what,” he commented on Akademiks‘ Instagram page.

That prompted a similarly fiery response from Soulja Boy, who wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Or I’m slapping the shit out [you] and metro.”

21 Savage

The 33-year-old then taunted Metro over the death of his mother by wishing him a happy Mother’s Day and shared screenshots of old DMs from the producer asking to work together.

Soulja added in a separate post: “I don’t give a fuck!!!! It’s always cool when a n-gga come at me but when I defend myself it’s too much huh?! Fuck that n-gga mama!!!!!!!!!! Don’t speak on my name bitch!”

He also challenged the duo to a boxing match: “I’ll beat the fuck out you @MetroBoomin and @21savage sign the boxing contract since u pussy n-ggaz so tough!!!”

21 Savage

Neither Metro nor 21 have responded as of this writing.

Outside of a brewing beef with Soulja Boy, Metro Boomin has been busy trolling Hip Hop’s public enemy number one, Drake.

Earlier this week, he sweetened his “BBL Drizzy Beat Giveaway” by offering a $10,000 cash prize, as well as a free beat, to the winner.

The multi-platinum producer launched the contest earlier this month by uploading an instrumental on SoundCloud featuring a sped up sample of a woman singing “BBL Drizzy.”

21 Savage

Metro has been at the heart of Drake’s “20 vs. 1” rap beef, with the 6 God telling him to “shut up and make some drums” on his diss song “Push Ups” and accusing him of turning Future against him on “Family Matters.”

Drake Deads Kendrick Lamar Beef After Perceived Defeat

Drake has seemingly decided that it’s better to accept defeat when it comes to battling Kendrick Lamar, especially now that there’s been an all-but-unanimous decision that the Compton rapper came out on top.

Drake

Taking to his Instagram Stories on Saturday (May 11), Drizzy posted an illustration of a Japanese samurai facing off against a huge cavalry — a nod to the “20 vs. 1” narrative he referenced on his diss song “Push Ups.”

Above the picture, he wrote: “Good times. Summer vibes up next.”

Many fans took the post to mean that he’s respectfully bowed out of the battle between himself and Kendrick. “and just like that one of the greatest beefs in hip hop history has just ended,” opined one fan, while another wrote: “he threw the white flag.”

Drake previously appeared to respond to the outcome of the beef when he posted a clip from the Netflix series A Man in Full which features veteran actor Jeff Daniels in the lead role.

In the scene, Daniels’ character says: “I don’t mean this as a criticism. Maybe I do. But when you die, will people notice? When I go, there are gonna be a lot of memories of me by a lot of people, many of whom hate me. Even so, a person needs to live with vigor. Otherwise, what’s the point?”

While everyone from Joe Budden to Cam’ron and Ma$e believes that Kendrick Lamar took home the victory, TDE label head Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith thinks that another winner emerged victorious: the culture.

Drake

“This battle is over. A win for the culture, while keeping it all on wax,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter) earlier this week. “Especially when these publications try to make it something else.

“We proved them wrong. That’s a victory within itself. On another note, it’s time to wrap up this TDE 20th anniversary compilation.”

Like Top Dawg, Freddie Gibbs also feels a third party was the biggest beneficiary of the battle between Drake and Kendrick.

Drake

Knowing Gangsta Gibbs isn’t one to shy away from sharing his opinion, a fan took to X earlier this week to ask the Indiana rapper who he thinks won the feud. “The record labels,” Gibbs simply responded
