Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson has said she was left “shocked” and “angered” after OpenAI launched a chatbot with an “eerily similar” voice to her own. The actress said she had previously turned down an approach by the company to voice its new chatbot, which reads text aloud to users.

When the new model, called Sky, debuted last week commentators were quick to draw comparisons between the chatbot’s tone and Johansson’s in the 2013 film Her.

OpenAI said on Monday that it would remove the voice, but insisted that it was not meant to be an “imitation” of the star.

However, Johansson accused the company, and its founder Sam Altman, of deliberately copying her voice, in a statement seen by the BBC on Monday evening.

“When I heard the released demo, I was shocked, angered and in disbelief that Mr Altman would pursue a voice that sounded so eerily similar to mine,” she wrote.

“Mr Altman even insinuated that the similarity was intentional, tweeting a single word ‘her’ – a reference to the film in which I voiced a chat system, Samantha, who forms an intimate relationship with a human.”

Set in the near future, 2013 film Her sees Joaquin Phoenix fall in love with his device’s operating system, which is voiced by Ms Johansson.

Nintendo Switch Online Celebrates the Game Boy’s 35th Anniversary

Nintendo has released three new Game Boy titles for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, and they’re all part of the console’s original launch lineup from way back in 1989.

Since Game Boy games first started making their way to the service back in February last year, several titles from the illustrious handheld’s library have been added to the service, but these three have been specially selected to commemorate the Game Boy’s 35th birthday.

The first is, of course, none other than Super Mario Land, an iconic (if somewhat strange) Mario platformer that features not only sidescrolling platforming, but also R-Type-style shooter stages.Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, the followup to the original Super Mario Land (and the game in which we were first introduced to Wario), has been available on Nintendo Switch Online since February last year, but the first game hasn’t been available on the service until now.

The second game will be familiar if you’ve ever played Breakout. It’s Alleyway, a pretty unashamed Breakout clone co-developed by Nintendo and Intelligent Systems, the studio that would go on to develop Fire Emblem and WarioWare, among many others.

Finally, Nintendo Switch Online now plays host to Baseball, another one of the Game Boy’s launch titles and a pretty modest interpretation of the great sport. Hey, we’re in the early days of handheld gaming here!

You can check out the aforementioned games in action right here via the latest Nintendo Switch Online Game Boy trailer. These games join a lineup that also includes not only games like Super Mario Land 2 and Capcom’s The Legend of Zelda: Oracle games, but also NES titles like Kid Icarus and StarTropics, along with SNES games like Harvest Moon.

Picking up the extra Expansion Pack addon also grants access to a range of games from the N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy Advance lineups, as well as the chance to play DLC for Splatoon 2, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at no extra cost.

Thunderful Games Closes Studio as Revenue Falls

SteamWorld publisher Thunderful Games has announced it will close one of its studios as part of an ongoing restructuring effort.

In its financial presentation for 2024’s first quarter, Thunderful reveals it will close Stage Clear Studios, the developer behind Last Kids on Earth and the Staff of Doom. The studio has also acted as a co-development outfit on a number of other games. Stage Clear’s closure is part of an ongoing restructuring effort that will also see the divestment of Headup, which Thunderful acquired in 2021. Said restructuring effort has already resulted in Thunderful laying off around 20% of its workforce earlier this year.

News of Stage Clear’s closure comes as Thunderful reports a 28% drop in revenue on a year-over-year basis. Thunderful says this is partly down to SteamWorld Build sales not improving as the company had hoped.A number of Thunderful projects have also been canceled; the group says it’s either canceled or divested three internal projects and nine third-party efforts.

These include Tinkertown, which Thunderful has divested along with Headup, as well as projects codenamed Axe and Strawberry, the latter of which was to be a SteamWorld title.

Third-party projects Thunderful has canceled or divested, meanwhile, include Headup games Soulslinger and Symphonia, as well as FuturLab’s Ikaro Will Not Die. Several unannounced projects have also been canceled or divested.Thunderful says it still has twelve games in development internally, as well as four lining up as part of its publishing pipeline. Upcoming internal projects include party-based RPG Vendir: Plague of Lies, which is set to launch later this month, plus the recently-announced SteamWorld Heist 2.

Third-party publishing efforts, meanwhile, include survival sim Aska, “high-speed time-trial racer” Phantom Spark and 2.5D platformer Replaced, and that’s all in addition to a project currently codenamed Peach.

We’ll have to wait and see if any of these projects bear fruit (no pun intended on Peach’s part). Stay tuned for more on this and all other things Thunderful-related.

Core Keeper Release Date Set for August

Sandbox survival adventure Core Keeper finally has a release date, with the game’s 1.0 update and console version emerging from the caves in the summer.

Per a post on the Core Keeper Steam page, the top-down pixel-art survive-’em-up is coming to PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch on August 27th, which is also when the 1.0 update will arrive for PC. If you’re one of the hundreds of thousands of people who picked the game up during its Early Access period, you’ll be pleased to know that Core Keeper’s 1.0 update will feature major changes to the game’s content and features, and it’ll also bring a ton of quality-of-life improvements.

As for what’s actually coming as part of that 1.0 update, developer Pugstorm is remaining tight-lipped for now. The studio says it’s got “something cool” planned for the full Core Keeper release, though, and that more information is coming soon. Core Keeper’s Summer update, which was scheduled to launch…well, sometime in summer, will now take the form of a performance and bug fix-focused patch rather than bringing any new content with it.

However, the content that was originally planned for the Summer update will now arrive as part of Core Keeper 1.0, so you’re not missing out on any extra fun.

The game was originally released in Early Access back in March 2022, racking up 100,000 sales within its first two days on release and breaking the 250,000 barrier within a week.

Hideo Kojima recently gave an exciting update for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, revealing that filming and voice recording has been completed for the upcoming sequel. Death Stranding 2 was first shown off during The Game Awards 2022 with a cryptic teaser of an older Sam Porter Bridges and plenty of surreal imagery.

A few years later, fans were greeted with a longer Death Stranding 2 story trailer that detailed Sam and Fragile’s new mission to reconnect their post-apocalyptic world, just like they did for the United Cities of America in the first game.The Death Stranding 2 story trailer also provided an updated release window of 2025, and since then, small snippets of information have been emerging from the shadows.

At the beginning of 2024, Hideo Kojima noted that he and his production team would be developing Death Stranding 2 and the Xbox-exclusive horror title OD simultaneously throughout the year and that Japanese voice recordings for the latter would soon begin. About a month later, the ever-enigmatic Kojima confirmed that Death Stranding 2 is moving away from the former United States setting of the first game, something that was hinted at in the trailer.

Hideo Kojima recently spoke again about Death Stranding 2 on his NHK radio show “Hideo Kojima’s Radio: Infinity” earlier this month. As reported by Famitsu (via Automaton Media), Kojima said that the development team has finished shooting and recording with Death Stranding 2’s cast, though he didn’t specify if this was for the English or Japanese version. Next comes an “adjustment phase,” in which the developers will work on adjusting gameplay and visual elements. According to Kojima, this will take about a year to complete.
