Consuming drugs and alcohol can be bad for your social life

0

Researchers suggest not texting while intoxicated or delaying posting on social media to minimise social harm. A new study highlights the negative consequences of social media posts and phone calls made while under the effects of alcohol and drugs. You’ve had a glass too many and couldn’t resist the impulse to call your ex and unburden yourself via voicemail. This unpleasant scene may be terribly familiar to some of us.

According to a new study published in the journal Substance Abuse and carried out by researchers at the Center for Drug Use and HIV/HCV Research (CDUHR) at New York University (NYU), people who regularly consume alcohol and/or drugs often engage in this sort of behaviour and regret it later on. Risky social media posts, including those showing people high on drugs, have the potential to cause embarrassment, stress, and conflict for users and those in their social networks,” said CDUHR researcher Joseph Palamar, PhD, MPH, the study’s lead author and an associate professor of Population Health at NYU School of Medicine.

drugs and alcohol

“It can also have adverse implications for one’s career, since the majority of employers now use social media platforms to screen job candidates and may search for evidence of substance use. 21% of study participants regretted posting on social media while under the influence of drugs

In this study, the researchers examined data from 872 adults surveyed while entering electronic music dance parties in New York City who reported current or previous drug use. Participants were asked if they had ever posted on social media, called or texted someone, or posed in a photo while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and if they had regretted doing so later on.

The researchers estimated that more than a third of the participants (34.3%) posted on social media while not in their normal state. Of those, 21.4% regretted it. The study also showed that the participants who were most likely to do so were those who had taken cannabis or cocaine.

“While prevention programmes have largely focused on physical safety — for example, not driving after drinking — such programmes can also stress that using a smartphone while high can increase the risk of someone engaging in regretful behaviour.

“Tactics such as using apps to prevent texting while intoxicated or delaying posting on social media until one is no longer experiencing drug effects may help to minimise social harm,” outlined Palamar.

Did Black Coffee Cheat on Enhle Mbali with someone she knew?

Actress Enhle Mbali recently opened up about her feelings regarding the cheating scandals that have happened in her marriage with DJ Black Coffee (real name Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo) during an interview with DJ Zinhle on her YouTube show Sincerely Yours Enhle Mbali. Although the interview was meant to be about DJ Zinhle’s own relationship experiences with her current partner, rapper AKA – who left her to be with Bonang Matheba while she was pregnant with their daughter Kairo – it gave Enhle the opportunity to open up about her own experience.

Enhle-Mbali-and-Black-Coffee

Speaking about the times she was in the media because of a cheating scandal, Enhle said: “I went through two scandals: one there was a sex tape, one it was just rachetness and I remember in my pain, in my tears, in my strength and in my stillness, there was one day when I thought ‘why do I care so much? Why do I want to listen to society say ‘he’s cheated on you twice, leave’ what is my heart saying? What is my spirit saying? And my spirit said ‘you love him, sit your a** down and do what is best for you and your family’.

The actress who shares a son with Black Coffee has been at the center of divorce rumours following public speculation that her husband cheated on her with David Guetta’s ex-wife Cathy Guetta.

Although she has not spoken out about the cheating scandal publicly before this, she did post a video of herself and Cathy Guetta from a year ago on her Instagram Wtories.

During the interview she asks Zinhle how she felt during AKA and Bonangs very public relationship.

Zinhle described the time as “dry and wintery and cold and dark. Enhle then explained what the most painful part of being cheated on has been for her. Personally, for me, cheating is an issue, but not as big as the fact that a person sat in front of you and lied to your face every single day.” She explained.

“On top of that it’s with a person we allowed into our home, into our space. It’s with a person I love and now I find out that you love them in that kind of way,” she said, alluding to the speculation that Black Coffee might have cheated with someone who was close to the couple.

Although Zinhle and AKA are now back together and mending their relationship, Enhle and Black Coffee have not publicly commented to the state of their marriage. City Press previously reported that the couple were allegedly heading for divorce court, citing the DJs rumoured infidelities and meddling family members as the reason for Enhle serving her husband with divorce papers.

In a statement obtained by The Juice by Capacity Relations on behalf of Enhle, the artist and talent management company said: “We have no comment on this. We have however noticed some irresponsible articles being published on the issue.

Dear White People – Season 3

0

The satirical series – which picks up where the acclaimed 2014 film by the same name left off – follows a group of Winchester University’s students of colour as they navigate a diverse landscape of social injustice, cultural bias, political correctness (or lack thereof) and sometimes misguided activism in the millennial age.

WHAT WE THOUGHT:

Here’s the thing about watching season after season of a show: It’s easy to get bored. It’s a bit like the characters have become your best friends and you can predict their reaction in any situation. This type of familiarity breeds contempt and the show you once loved becomes the one you sit through on your phone.

This disinterest is something that the people behind Dear White People have taken care to avoid. They have given each character, even those who were not at the forefront in previous seasons, a real and relatable journey.

Of course, fans of the movie and the previous seasons of the Netflix show will remember that the show focuses on Sam White, a compelling student activist and simultaneously flawed anti-hero. Throughout the first and second season of the show, we saw the radio host fight for racial equality as well as deal with her own demons. In this season we meet a different Sam; she’s burnt out and exhausted, from not only fighting racism on her campus at Winchester but in her greater community in America.

Dear White People

The fatigue has spread through her friends and even her past enemies. The old crew have almost all chosen to focus on what they need to succeed, or who they want to love, or even how to process their own trauma.

One of the most poignant storylines involves a beloved character who gets everything he wants in this season but cannot access his joy because he hasn’t processed his trauma after a violent incident. On paper, that premise could be very lacklustre, but the finished product is entirely different. It’s a richly woven tapestry of life experiences. Some characters find themselves through sexual misadventures while others lose themselves in relationships that aren’t working. My favourite part, though, has been seeing those characters interact with each other. It’s like seeing a bigger story that the showrunner and writers are trying to tell.

It’s a story of how the worst things that we go through change not only our own lives but also those of our nearest and dearest. In a lot of ways, we bleed onto each other. We affect each other in ways that we can’t possibly know the full extent of.

That’s the heaviness of this comedy. The truth of shared human experiences slips in through the laughs. That being said, the laughs are fantastic as well. There’s an incredible amount of post-modern humour, complete with intertextual references that fans of pop culture will love — especially those who watch Handmaid’s Tale, Queer Eye and Tyler Perry movies.

I would say that everyone who has watched Dear White People for the last two seasons should watch this season. It feels like the people behind the scenes, and even the actors, have all tried their best to make a piece of art that holds a humorous mirror up to modern society and activism.

Easy ways to take care for your lingerie

0

Lingerie gives you a lovely boost of confidence, but if you’re just tossing them in the washing machine, chances are it will feel like you’re replacing your good undies way too often.

Here are 3 ways to take care for your lingerie and ensure that they remain looking sexxxy and sassy for as long as you need them.

Washing machine. You probably let out a collective groan at the news about the washing machine! Don’t worry, we’re not suggesting you spend gruelling hours hand-washing your smalls, but bras, especially of the underwired variety, really don’t do well in modern washing machines. The colour fades, the fabric and elastic wears out and they lose their shape and ability to support you.

 lingerie

Good news. The good news is most bras don’t need washing as often as we think – unless it’s a sports bra – which should be washed at every wearing. Your bra needs a ‘rest’ daily for the elastic to cool and reform more than it needs a wash.

Rotate from two to three good bras regularly. While a quick hand wash in a delicate fabric cleaner really is the best way, you can get away with a gentle washing machine cycle if you use a lingerie bag and opt for no-spin.

Undies. Undies, meaning ‘knickers’ are a little more difficult, as you really do need the bacteria-cleansing properties of a washing machine, but opt for gentle cycles, delicate laundry liquid, a lingerie bag and no spin to keep them looking better for longer.

Dry your delicates flat, preferably out of direct sunshine, and avoid the dryer at all costs. Your smalls will thank you.
