The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder reveals why he left acting

0

Ian Somerhalder, famed for his role as Damon Salvatore in the hit series, The Vampire Diaries, reflect on stepping away from acting. Ian looked back at his career as he celebrates the anniversaries of Lost and TVD. Ian shared his thoughts on the impact of these shows on his life, calling it a “very humbling experience.

Ian, who played Boone in Lost, faced a difficult moment as the first major character killed off in season one. Losing that, I was the first one cast and the first one killed, that was a sort of tough pill to swallow,” he said.

With the success of TVD, which premiered in 2009, Ian reached a larger audience, noting that the show “now has been seen by almost like 1.2 billion people globally. He expressed “enormous gratitude” for the show, adding, “That path has gotten me to where I feel most authentic anyway, which is in a pair of cowboy boots, feeding the cows and running horses.”

However, after his role in V Wars, Ian decided to step back from acting five years ago to focus on family and his environmental projects. I stepped away from that after V Wars to build these companies, launch films like Kiss the Ground, Common Ground and Ground Swell and raise my kids,” he said.

Ian added, “I remember sitting with my management talking about this, saying, ‘Hey, this is the only thing I’ve ever known that’s ever sustained my family, and I’m walking away from it,’ at this sort of peak, could have gone and done anything, but these partnerships mean way more to me. At the end of it, it’s the grounding stuff that matter,” Ian concluded.

Lebanon says Israeli airstrikes killed at least 492

0

Israel’s military said it launched airstrikes against Hezbollah sites in Lebanon yesterday, which Lebanese authorities said had killed 492 people and sent tens of thousands fleeing for safety on the country’s deadliest day in decades. After some of the heaviest cross-border exchanges of fire since hostilities flared in October, Israel warned people in Lebanon to evacuate areas where it said the armed movement was storing weapons.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent a short video statement addressed to the Lebanese people. Israel’s war is not with you, it’s with Hezbollah. For too long Hezbollah has been using you as human shields,” he said.

Families from south Lebanon loaded cars, vans and trucks with belongings and people, sometimes multiple generations in one vehicle. As bombs rained down, children crammed onto parents’ laps and suitcases were tied to car roofs.

Highways north were gridlocked. “I grabbed all the important papers and we got out. Strikes all around us. It was terrifying,” said Abed Afou, who was with his family, including three sons aged 6 to 13 and several other relatives. They sat in traffic as it crawled north.

They did not know where they would stay, he said, but just wanted to reach Beirut. Nasser Yassin, the Lebanese minister coordinating the crisis response, told Reuters 89 temporary shelters in schools and other facilities had been activated, with capacity for more than 26 000 people as civilians fled “Israeli atrocities”.

After almost a year of war against Hamas in Gaza on its southern border, Israel is shifting its focus to the northern frontier, where Iran-backed Hezbollah has been firing rockets into Israel in support of Hamas, also backed by Iran.

Israel’s military said it struck Hezbollah in Lebanon’s south, east and north, including “launchers, command posts and terrorist infrastructure.” The Israeli Air Force struck about 1,600 Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, it said.

Lebanon’s health ministry said at least 492 people had been killed, including 35 children, and 1,645 wounded. One Lebanese official said it was Lebanon’s highest daily death toll from violence since the 1975-1990 civil war.

The fighting has raised fears that the US, Israel’s close ally, and Iran will be sucked into a wider war.

Saudi Arabia expressed deep concern on Monday and urged all parties to exercise restraint, state news agency SPA reported.

A senior US State Department official said the United States did not support a cross-border escalation between Israel and Hezbollah and that Washington was going to discuss “concrete ideas” with allies and partners to prevent the war from broadening.

Israeli officials have said the recent uptick in airstrikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon is designed to force the Iran-aligned group to agree to a diplomatic solution.

The US official, briefing reporters in New York on condition of anonymity, pushed back on the Israeli position, saying the Biden administration was focused on “reducing tensions … and breaking the cycle of strike-counterstrike.”

Also in New York, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Israel wanted to drag the Middle East into a full-blown war by provoking Iran to join the Israel-Hezbollah conflict.

“It is Israel that seeks to create this all-out conflict,” he told journalists after his arrival to attend the UN General Assembly, saying the consequences of such instability would be irreversible.

CONFLICT ‘PEAK’

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said Monday marked a “significant peak” in the nearly year-long conflict.

“On this day we have taken out of order tens of thousands of rockets and precise munition. What Hezbollah has built over a period of 20 years since the second Lebanon War is in fact being destroyed by the IDF,” he said in a statement, referring to the Israel Defense Forces.

Yesterday evening Israel launched a strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs aimed at senior Hezbollah leader Ali Karaki, the head of the southern front. Hezbollah later said he was safe and had moved to a secure location.

But Hamas’ armed wing said its field commander in southern Lebanon, Mahmoud al Nader, was killed in an Israeli air strike.

Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a statement that Israeli strikes had hit long-range cruise missiles, heavyweight rockets, short-range rockets and explosive drones.

In response, Hezbollah said it launched dozens of missiles at a military base in northern Israel.

Sirens warning of Hezbollah rocket fire sounded across northern Israel, including in the port city of Haifa, and in the northern part of the occupied West Bank, the military said.

About 60 000 people have been evacuated from northern Israel because of the cross-border fighting. Gallant said the campaign would continue until the residents had returned to their homes. Hezbollah for its part has vowed to fight until there is a ceasefire in Gaza.

Hagari said Hezbollah put weaponry “inside Lebanese villages and civilian homes, and intended to fire them toward civilians in Israel while endangering the Lebanese civilian population.”

Hezbollah has not commented on the assertion that it has hidden weapons in houses, which Reuters could not independently verify, but it has said it does not place military infrastructure near civilians.

The strikes have redoubled the pressure on the group, which last week suffered heavy losses when thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies used by its members exploded. The operation was widely attributed to Israel, which has not confirmed nor denied responsibility.

The foreign ministers of the Group of Seven major democracies warned that the Middle East risked being dragged into a broader conflict that no country would gain from, according to a statement released after meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

Rapper T.I. and his wife Tiny Harris were awarded a massive eight-figure judgment in their lawsuit against MGA Entertainment. The 43-year-old rapper and his 43-year-old wife Tameka ‘Tiny’ Cottle-Harris were awarded $71 million. Moreover, the jury originally handed out $17.8 million in initial damages, plus $53.6 million in punitive damages, following the three-week trial in Santa Ana, California.

As per Daily Mail, MGA Entertainment launched their doll line L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G. doll line in 2019, prompting a lawsuit from T.I. and Tiny Harris. The couple claimed the dolls infringement on the likeness of their girl group they created called OMG Girlz, which they founded in 2009.

Additionally, the first trial ended in a mistrial in January 2023, with the second trial later that year resulting in a win for MGA, with the couple also accused of sexually assaulting a woman back in 2005. However, a July 2023 Supreme Court ruling allowed for the case to be re-tried to lend more weight to the importance of customer confusion in the marketplace, as per the outlet.

In regards to this, the re-trial focused on seven of the 32 dolls MGA Entertainment produced, with the jury finding that all seven copied the group’s likeness and trade dress.

Furthermore, the jury found that MGA infringed on the group’s likeness in some but not all of the remaining 25 dolls, though some were copied from other artists like Lady Gaga and Beyoncé, as per the publication. It is worth mentioning that T.I. and Tiny founded the group in 2009, which consisted of Tiny’s daughter Zonnique “Star” Pullins, Bahja “Beauty” Rodriguez and Breaunna “Babydoll” Womack.

Pact for the Future could prevent world from heading off the rails

0

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says the Pact for the Future opens pathways to new possibilities and opportunities. UN member states have adopted the pact at the start of the organization’s flagship Summit of the Future, which opened in New York yesterday.

The agreement, which includes a ‘Global Digital Compact’ and a ‘Declaration for Future Generations’ seeks to reshape multilateral institutions to better respond to the complex challenges facing the international community from the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDDs), to reshaping global financial institutions and realigning the Peace and Security Architecture towards greater fairness and equity.

President Cyril Ramaphosa welcomed the adoption of the pact and urged member states to forge a global consensus on how to implement the solutions embedded therein and ensure that the development divide is bridged. Addressing the Opening Segment of the Summit of the Future Plenary, Guterres says the agreement could prevent the world from heading off the rails if implemented.

He says, “The Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations open pathways to new possibilities and opportunities. On peace and security, they promise a breakthrough on reforms to make the Security Council more reflective of today’s world, addressing the historic under-representation of Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. They lay the foundations for a more agile Peacebuilding Commission, and for a fundamental review of peace operations to make them fit for the conditions they face.”

Guterres says, “They represent the first agreed multilateral support for nuclear disarmament in more than a decade. They recognize the changing nature of conflict and commit to steps to prevent an arms race in outer space and to govern the use of lethal autonomous weapons. They include measures to mount an immediate and coordinated response to complex global shocks. On sustainable development, these agreements represent major progress towards groundbreaking reforms of the international financial architecture.”

He argues that the new pact sets the course for international cooperation that could meet expectations, urging member states to get to work towards a future of peace, dignity and prosperity for all ideals that would be tested on implementation.

It was not all smooth sailing when the pact came up for its consensus adoption due to objections from the Russian Federation backed by six countries that sought to introduce an amendment emphasising the principle of non-interference within the domestic jurisdiction of states by the UN System.

However, a further amendment introduced by the Republic of Congo on behalf of African states that sought no action on the Russian amendment was backed by 143 member states, dismissing the Russian proposal and allowing for the pact to be adopted.

Kamala Harris presses for 2nd debate as Donald Trump opts out citing early voting concerns

United States Vice President Kamala Harris is pushing for a new debate next month as the November 5 election nears, while former president Donald Trump is declining, citing the start of early voting in some states. He should accept because I feel very strongly that we owe it to the American people and to the voters to meet once more before Election Day,” Harris told supporters at a fundraiser in New York City.

“We should have another debate,” she added. “My opponent is looking for a reason to avoid. A representative for Trump’s campaign referred to the presidential candidate’s comments at a rally on Saturday when asked about Harris’ remarks.

Speaking to supporters at a North Carolina rally on Saturday, Trump said: “The problem with another debate is that it’s just too late. Voting has already started.” Harris on Sunday acknowledged that early voting had started in some US states but noted that it is a close contest with more than a month to go.

“This race is as close as it could be. This is a margin of error race,” she said. Harris on Sunday urged Trump to accept a proposal to debate on CNN on October 23, as a follow-up to their September 10 debate on ABC, Reuters reported.

Ray J admits he never saw Sean Diddy Combs’s dark side

Shock to the core’ was the right word, Ray J described after the allegations against Sean ‘Diddy‘ Combs came into public, confessing he never knew he had been allegedly involved in horrific crimes.

In an interview with NewsNation, the One Wish singer said he had viewed the disgraced music mogul with admiration at the start of his career. We’ve all been around him, at least in my era, and have looked up to him,” the 43-year-old noted.

Also, the songwriter said he often went to his lavish parties, and when the host, Chris Cuomo, asked whether he saw or heard anything about the crimes he was accused of, such as sex trafficking and racketeering. Ray shared, “We’ve never seen the stuff that’s being said and the stuff that people are finding out, like, I’ve never been in rooms that people are talking about, and I never knew they existed.”

“And a lot of people in the industry can agree with me in that sense. Like you all wanted to go and have a good time at a Diddy party.” The shock that followed the Hollywood community after Diddy’s arrest led Ray to call for unity in the industry. We just need to use it as a moment to reflect, not to criticize, but find a better way to move forward as leaders, individuals in this culture that we’re in right now,” he concluded.
