Although Charlize Theron has set a benchmark few can match, Tinseltown’s warm embrace of Thuso Mbedu (“The Underground Railroad”), Lesley-Ann Brandt (“Lucifer”) and Sasha Pieterse (“Pretty Little Liars”) is a win.

For the premiere of Prime Video’s African original movie, “Gangs of Lagos”, the pacesetters of Nigerian entertainment industries stepped out, decked in their different and daring designated theme of the occasion, “Owambe Gangster.”

The film’s star cast includes Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Chiké, Tobi Bakre, Bimbo Ademoye, Chioma Akpotha, Iyabo Ojo, Toyin Abraham Ajeyemi, Pasuma, Zlatan, Adebowale “Debo” Adedayo (Mr Macaroni), Yhemolee, Tayo Faniran, Demi Banwo, Olarotimi Michael Fakunle, and Damilola Ogunsi.

Directed and produced by Jáde Osiberu, “Gangs Of Lagos” is currently showing on Prime Video.

After Mbatha’s success in Mzansi, she admitted the transition to Hollywood wasn’t smooth sailing. Shooting “Coming 2 America” was a “daunting” task, she said, because of “the bigness of the film, the legacy of the film, being surrounded by Hollywood royalty.” But it emboldened her, too, as she constantly reminded herself “that you’ve worked hard and you deserve to be here.”

Mbatha says it gives her hope that she doesn’t have to sound American to be a successful actress in Hollywood. She doesn’t have to look American to be a successful actress in Hollywood,” she says. “It’s really just a great time to be recognized as Black talent and to be given equal opportunity. In the past, the opportunities were just not there.”
