After Mbatha’s success in Mzansi, she admitted the transition to Hollywood wasn’t smooth sailing. Shooting “Coming 2 America” was a “daunting” task, she said, because of “the bigness of the film, the legacy of the film, being surrounded by Hollywood royalty.” But it emboldened her, too, as she constantly reminded herself “that you’ve worked hard and you deserve to be here.”
Mbatha says it gives her hope that she doesn’t have to sound American to be a successful actress in Hollywood. She doesn’t have to look American to be a successful actress in Hollywood,” she says. “It’s really just a great time to be recognized as Black talent and to be given equal opportunity. In the past, the opportunities were just not there.”
