J. Cole has tipped his hat to the current crop of female rappers, who he says are responsible for some of the best and most exciting moments in Hip Hop right now. The Dreamville leader made the comments in a sit-down with Kevin Hart for his Hart To Heart show on Peacock, where he shared his thoughts on the current state of Hip Hop.
“I think it’s fire,” Cole said. “It’s a whole different ball game, like a whole different crop of young superstars and styles. I’ve been feeling this for like maybe a year or two — I hate to say it ’cause it almost sounds like pandering — but I really do think like man, it’s a lot of fire-female rappers.
“I feel like they’re doing some of the most exciting [stuff], commercially — they’re giving us a lot of fire moments and I feel like that’s something that wasn’t around when we were growing up.”
He continued: “You always had a Lil Kim, a Foxy [Brown], but there could never be more than one almost, it felt like. Now it’s like, bro, we’re getting moments and moments and moments. I think it’s hard.”

Female rappers have notably been on a tear these past few years, with newcomers like Ice Spice, GloRilla, Latto, Coi Leray, Sexyy Red, and Scar Lip — as well as more established stars like Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, and City Girls — making big moves for women in Hip Hop.
J. Cole is hardly the first male rapper to recognize this diva dominance. Lil Baby recently claimed that female rappers are “running the game” right now, while Lil Durk also credited them for making the genre “fun again.”
“Make hip hop fun again we understand everybody got money but let’s fuck em up like we were doing s/o the females who been working salute keep going up,” he wrote on Instagram last month.
Saweetie previously chimed in on the conversation last November, saying that women are running the rap game right now because of the prevalence of “violence and disrespect in male music.”
“I mean, L.A. and other cities, it just goes to show that this is the reason why women is running rap and Hip Hop,” she said in an interview with Bootleg Kev. “Because there’s just so much violence and disrespect in the male music. You gotta think, like, remember, what was it, like ’16/’17, remember when like YG, Tyga, Chris [Brown], Big Sean, TeeFlii was out? It was fun, party music.”
However, Fabolous came out last week and said that while he likes seeing so many women thriving in Hip Hop, the music they’re making often sounds one-dimensional.
“I love hearing female rappers talking some real shit,” he wrote on his Instagram Story. “Women are so strong. Have so many stories and perspectives that we need to hear in pure form.”
He continued: “No disrespect to any female rappers out there but I think there’s only one style of female rap/Hip Hop being promoted, programmed, and looked at as successful now.”
In other J. Cole news, the “No Role Modelz” rapper recently linked up with his Dreamville signee Bas for the latter’s new track “Passport Bros,” which dropped on Friday (July 21).
