Ice Spice Admits That She Cried When She First Met Nicki Minaj

Ice Spice has shared details about the moment she first met her idol, Nicki Minaj — and it was apparently a real tear-jerker. During a recent in-depth interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, the Bronx native detailed her emotional first encounter with Nicki Minaj — a moment she said she manifested — revealing that despite trying to play it cool, she had the jitters.

“I was, like, nervous to get there,” Ice Spice recalled. “Once I got there, I was like, ‘Okay, I’m chilling.’ But then I heard her, like, say something, and then I got nervous.

“When she hugged me, I started crying… I cried, but I walked away. Like, I didn’t say anything to her. I just feel like, ‘Bro, like just the journey.’ You know, I love Nicki, and meeting her was great and everything, but for me, it also just mostly felt like, ‘This is a full circle moment.’

The pair have since collaborated on two of this summer’s biggest songs, “Princess Diana (Remix)” and “Barbie World” from the Barbie movie soundtrack.

Check out the interview below:

Elsewhere in the conversation, the “Munch” rhymer revealed she talks to Drake on a consistent basis — and considers him a mentor. “We talk all the time, and we’re always just laughing about some things that go on. And I’ll ask him, ‘What should I do with this? Or how’d you go about this? Or did you ever experience that?’” the “Deli” hitmaker said.

“And he’ll — I’m not going to give real examples — but he’ll tell me, ‘I did this and you should do that, too, because you can.’ And I’ll be like, ‘You’re right. Period. I’m going to do that.’ It’s like coach vibes.”

Ice Spice’s admission comes just as she’s released an extended version of her January EP, Like..? — which features her breakout singles, “Munch (Feelin’ U),” “In Ha Mood” and “Bikini Bottom,” as well as two new offerings titled “How High?” and “Butterfly Ku.”

Though, the excitement was quickly overshadowed by speculation that Ice Spice throws shade in the direction of Latto on two of the release’s tracks.

On “How High?” the Bronx native rips a page out of Biggie’s rhyme book by spitting: “Now she all on the floor when I kick in the door/ How you mad I do less ’cause you gotta do more?”

And on “Butterfly Ku,” she raps: “Where she at? On the floor/ She gettin’ money, but I’m gettin’ more.” Both sets of bars appear to make reference to Latto’s mega-hit, “Put It On Da Floor.”

Tension between the two rappers has apparently been brewing in recent months. In March, Latto clapped back at a fan who accused her of copying Ice Spice, adding that she’s sick of people misinterpreting her tweets.

The accusations were made after the “Big Energy” hitmaker posted a photo on Instagram of her striking a similar pose to that of Spice on the cover of her Like..? EP, with one fan writing: “YOUUUU posted this… so YOU’RE creating the narrative!”

Latto responded to the fan in question by writing: “Every time y’all accuse me of copying folks ima clear it up. Nun mo nun less.” She added in a separate tweet: “I don’t like how y’all take my tweets & make them fit ur weak ass narratives.”

The rivalry may also have been fueled by Nicki Minaj, who crowned Ice Spice the Princess of Rap earlier this year and has dropped two collaborations with the rising star: “Princess Diana” and “Barbie World.”

Her lofty co-sign came after she got into a heated Twitter spat with Latto over the 2023 Grammy Award nominations, which saw the pair trade personal insults and leak private DMs from one another.
