A woman who claims to be a customary wife of the late icon Mbongeni Ngema has turned to the government after being allegedly sidelined in the burial proceedings. Yolanda ‘Wanda’ Moncho is said to be the managing director of Diamond Edge, an artist management company. She appealed to the KwaZulu-Natal premier to assist her in the burial proceedings after being barred by Ngema’s family.

Moncho made it known that she was also four months pregnant with his child. Reports have it that the award-winning thespian sent his delegation to Moncho’s family in Diepkloof, Soweto, in 2021. It was recently announced that Ngema would receive a special provincial funeral category 2.

Part of her appeal to the premier reads, “Over and above my role as Dr Ngema’s manager, I was also his customary wife, him having sent a delegation to my family in Diepkloof, Soweto, in 2021. As a matter of fact, at this very moment, I am 4 (sic) months pregnant with his child, whose birth he was very much looking forward to,” said Moncho.

However, she has it that she was forced to appeal to the premier after being sidelined by Ngema’s family. Reports have it the family did not accede to her request to be involved in the burial proceedings. She also considers turning to the courts if the premier fails to address her concern.

“However, in the unfortunate event that this does not happen, I will regrettably have to approach the courts on an urgent basis to seek relief. It is my sincere hope and wish that this does not become necessary,” said Moncho.
