Former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana defender Benson Mhlongo has lost his wife after a long illness, according to Zimoja. The former Bucs captain’s wife, Pretty Mhlongo, reportedly passed away in Intensive Care Unit at Life Fourways, north of Joburg, on Thursday 25 May.
According to a source, Pretty spend almost a month in hospital and she died peacefully in the presence of her husband and children. When she passed away, Benson was at the hospital to visit her, together with their children. It was as if they knew she was going to pass away,” adds the source.
Mhlongo – who was appointed as the headcoach for GladAfrica Championship side TS Sporting last year – also confirmed his wife’s passing, and said that no funeral arrangements have been made at this point.
“Yes, she is late. No funeral arrangements have been made yet. I can’t comment further,” he was quoted as saying. In last month’s issue of Soccer Laduma, Mhlongo spoke briefly about how he would like to be remembered, revealing that he does not want anyone to talk at his funeral. I think everyone I worked under or worked with can explain it better. Because when I die, I don’t need anyone to talk at my funeral.
“I have to put that in my Will. I don’t want anyone to talk,” the Alexandra-born retired footballer said. When aasked why, Mhlongo replied: “What is it that you want to say at my funeral you can’t say when I’m still alive?”
