It has been over three months and counting since the country woke up to the news that local legendary rapper Kiernan “AKA” Forbes and his friend and former business partner Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane were assassinated.
The two were gunned down outside the since-closed Durban-based restaurant Wish. While there was CCTV footage of the two’s last moments. To date, there have not been any tangible leads on the matter. This is despite the continuous false leads which are circulated in the media.
As such, yet another false story was circulated in the media, which had the hopes of his fans up.
SAPS dismisses claims of AKA gun being found
On Tuesday, 16 May 2023, another story was circulated surrounding the ongoing assassination case surrounding AKA. The story shared was reported by the now contentious handle Legal SA stating:
“The firearm that was used to shoot and kill legendary South African rapper Kiernan Forbes affectionately known as AKA has been recovered. The Firearm was found in the possession of a man in his early twenties from Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal.
The firearm was taken for ballistic tests and a positive match was made with the firearm and the round that ended Forbes’ life.”

Given that this felt like yet another tangible lead following the dismissal of the allegations that the assassins were allegedly discovered in Cape Town. It seems that the SAPS in Durban wanted to address the matter as soon as it seemed like it was garnering traction.
As such, SAPS released a statement addressing the matter at hand by rubbishing the claims. The statement read in part:
“Some media houses, who clearly seem hell-bent to botch any police endeavors to find the killers and bring justice to the families of the victims, started the day on Tuesday morning with unsubstantiated rumors and malicious allegations about the recovery of the so-called murder weapon.”
Shared by Durban SAPS’ provincial police spokesperson Lt-Col Robert Netshiunda, went on to highlight the effects of the constant paddling of unconfirmed leads by sharing:
“This insensitive, unethical, and inconsiderate reporting has great potential of arming the persons of interest with ammunition to further complicate police progress into the matter.”
Moreover, the word to journalists and persons of the media was:
“Journalists are also advised against formulating uncorroborated allegations for the sole reason of triggering a reaction or soliciting commentary from the police. The zeal to break the story should never surpass the responsibility to report truthfully and ethically.”
Lyn Forbes recently spoke on the matter of AKA’s killers and whether there will ever be arrests when it was reported as:
“I don’t want to say no I don’t think there will ever be arrests, I just don’t know if there will ever be arrests… I want to believe that the law will run its course. And the investigation will be handled in the best way possible. I don’t want to be negative and not believe that will happen, it’s just not the most important thing for me. Because nothing will bring him back.
“I believe that obviously, this is an organized crime, this is a hit. We all saw the video… so I do believe somebody is behind this. There are two things here, somebody who pulled a trigger. And I don’t think it would help me if I knew who that person was.”
