e.TV confirmed that its long-time-running isiZulu soapie Imbewu was set to end on Friday, 14 April 2023. This meant that there was an opening for a new show to take over the coveted time slot on the channel. As such, in March 2023, it was confirmed that The Final Chapter Production company would helm the upcoming soapie that was to replace Imbewu.

    As reported at the time:

Smoke & Mirrors is set in the landscape of a small mining town called Emnyameni. Here, we come to learn that the story lives up to its name- nothing and no one is true as they seem. Introducing the character of Thandiswa, a hairdresser by day, an escort by night, and a girl on a mission to rid the town of “The Unholy Trinity”, the group of morally corrupt men who run Emnyameni.

In light of the nearing end of Imbewu, eTV has shared more details on Smoke & Mirror’s main cast and the supporting trailer ahead of the premiere.

e.TV has shared an official statement confirming the main cast members for the upcoming soapie Smoke and Mirrors. The series is a female-led series as the official statement has confirmed that upcoming actress Ayanda Bandla has been selected to play the title role of Thandiswa Mseleku.

However, it is probably the lead male actor who will excite viewers to watch. This is as leading man Zolisa Xaluva has been confirmed as the title lead antagonist in the story as he is set to portray the leader of The Unholy Trinity Caesar, who is described as “the alpha and a cut-throat businessman who doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty.”

Additionally, the official statement went on to share the remaining main cast:

“We then meet Jaxon with an ‘X’, yes an ‘X’… He’s played by Meshack Mavuso – Magabane. He’s our flashy mayor and tends to live way beyond his means. Then, we’re introduced to Mthetho played by Kabomo Vilakazi. He’s the town’s police commissioner. Mthetho lives a double life that will one day catch up with him.”

Moreover, other veteran actors that are set to join the cast were included in the statement when stating, “amongst all these characters, there’s one matriarch in town whom everyone respects- Nomvea played by Charmaine Mtinta, she’s a powerful sangoma who no one can mess with but is he a match for Virginia, played by Zinhle Mabena, wife to the Alpha Caesar.”

Besides the leading actors, who have a proven track record. It seems that the channel and production company is investing in new and unseen talent. This is as it shared by the newcomers who will be joining the main cast which include:

“Khayalethu Xaba, and he plays the character of Mpendulo Mseleku, Thandiswa’s son. He’s a street-smart kid in his teens. Then, there’s Martha played by Lusanda Mbane. She’s a former sex worker and a two-star hotel owner in Emnyameni. And then, in comes, the town’s lovely couple-Nthabiseng portrayed by Angela Sithole, and Sakhile played by Siya Raymond.”

Wiseman Mncube Bids Farewell To “The Wife”

After three seasons Showmax’s most popular original series to date, The Wife, has come to an end. The telenovela was inspired by the series of novels by author Dudu Busani-Dube under the Hlomu title. The telenovela has had an interesting ride to its end as the telenovela deviated from the books, which was met with mixed emotions.

However, that did not stop the telenovela from a trending week in and out on Twitter. As such, as the telenovela comes to an end, one actress that has gotten flowers for her stellar performance is none other than lead Mbalenhle Mavimbela who played the title character of Hlumo Dladla.

Not only did she receive her flowers from the viewers. But even the cast of the series gave her flowers. This includes Bhut’ Omdala, Mondli Makhoba who was quoted as saying:

“Mbalenhle is an amazing actress, she is very talented, she chooses her moments carefully, and she plays generously… Working with her was refreshing because you know she will come prepared, ready to go where the scene takes her. She is respectful in her work; she understands who she is in a scene. She shines when needed and supports when needed, which is something many actors struggle with.”

Wiseman Mncube who came in ahead of the third and final season of the telenovela to replace Bonko Khoza as Mphele Zulu, and Hlomu’s main love interest in the series also had nothing but compliments for Mavimbela as he stated that:

“It was a blessing to work with such a talented actress. She welcomed me with open arms; she was loving and also respectful. She’s a dedicated professional and I wish her nothing but the best going forward. It was an honor to share a screen with her.”

While Mavimbela bid her farewell to the telenovela when she shot her last scene of the series. As reported at the time:

Mbalenhle who played Hlomu had been with the show since its inception, but her journey has sadly come to an end. She took to her Instagram page last week to share a video of her last moments on set.

In the video, Mbalenhle can be seen surrounded by the cast and crew while carrying a bouquet of flowers.

She wrote: “It’s a picture wrap for uMahlomu. I walked into this production as a young lady and left as a wise woman. Thank you to everyone who has supported me and has been a part of my journey from the very beginning.

Wiseman on the other hand waited until the finale where viewers had to bid a bittersweet goodbye to his troubled but beloved character.

My life has fallen apart – AKA’s mom

AKA’s mom Lynn Forbes has opened up about how she is handling the grief of losing a son almost two months after AKA’s death on 10 February.  Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, popularly known as AKA, was shot dead outside of Wish restaurant on Florida Road, Durban on 10 February, along with his friend Tebello “Tibz” Motsoane. His mom, Lynn Forbes, took to Instagram to share an update on how she is dealing with the grief — self care, self acceptance and social support.

“I get to decide how to put myself back together. If feels like my life has fallen apart and it has. However, I am leaning into my grief and feeling my emotions. Good self-care, self acceptance and social support is what gets me through the days. There is new life to be lived all around me,” she wrote. This comes after Lynn shared how she could never go back to her “old self” on 30 March.

She explained that there is no going back to the old version of yourself — the one before the pain of losing a loved one. Instead, there is a “new normal” which you need to adapt to.

    Lynn Forbes

“Trauma permanently changes us. A major life disruption leaves a ‘new normal’ in its wake. There is no ‘back to the old me’. You are different now. Full stop,” she wrote. This comes just a day after Lynn broke her silence on the alleged arrest of five suspects in connection to AKA’s murder.

IOL reported that three suspects have allegedly been arrested in Cape Town in connection to the murder of AKA. The suspects are reportedly still in police custody in Cape Town. The suspects will reportedly be brought to Durban, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) where they are expected to be charged. Netwerk24 later reported that two more men were also arrested in Belhar after police trailed them for weeks.

Lynn and AKA’s dad Tony Forbes released a statement addressing the Megacy’s reaction to the arrest of suspects. We are at a loss for words to describe or gratitude for the outpouring of love that we’ve received from the Megacy. We’ve seen people deeply hurt and angered by Kiernan murder and wanting justice. As a family, we empathise with the grief experienced and we understand your pain,” she wrote.
