Benny The Butcher‘s love for boxing has become a full-fledged event with the announcement of his first annual boxing match, Butcherfest.
Going down on July 1 in the rapper’s stomping grounds of upstate New York, the event will feature multiple fights and include a performance by Butcher himself. The main event features UFC fighters Jordan Griffin and Brok Weaver in the ring.
“IRVING, NY We havin’ the Biggest Fight event JULY 1st you gonna wanna be at,” he wrote in an Instagram announcement on Tuesday (June 20). “Multiple fights, amateur and Professional, Vendors & performance by The Butcher. It’s Belts, Trophies, and Pride on the line. FACEOFF GOIN’ DOWN TODAY.”
Talking to local news outlet 2 On Your Side, Benny The Butcher said the match is a way to bring the community together and have fun this summer.
“I just want people to come and support these fighters they got the heart to come out there and do that,” he said. “For those guys who go in that ring, they’re warriors, that’s brave. You gotta be brave to get in there to go in that ring. People watching and your family in the stands. You know you’re fighting in front of everybody that takes guts. You gotta have guts to do that.”
On the music side of things, Benny The Butcher will be dropping a new album with Hit-Boy later this summer, but he already let fans know ahead of time – expect to hear a whole new sound.
In a series of tweets last month, the Buffalo native let his followers know how he’ll be coming on his new LP.
“NO…my album won’t be loaded up with boom bap beats…I did that already,” he wrote. “The sound watered down too much y’all can have that shit. I’m talking all this shit but the beats that are boom bap are OD boom bap. I did everything on this album. Any rapper who we’ve ever considered top 5 did both.”
When a fan encouraged him by noting it’s “good news” and that if people “want the old Benny, just listen to his old shit,” Benny agreed.
“Right…they gon say it sounds the same anyway…switch it up to hey cry too so fuck ’em…EVERYBODY CANT GO.” Everybody Can’t Gois set to arrive on August 11 and will serve as the Griselda rapper’s Def Jam debut.
