AKA’s dad speaks out

AKA

AKA’s father, Tony Forbes, has spoken out for the first time since reports that five men suspected to have been involved in his son’s brazen murder were arrested on Sunday, 26 March.

IOL broke the news on Sunday, reporting that three men had been taken in for interrogation in Cape Town, Western Cape. On Monday, Netwerk24 corroborated the report, adding that two other men were also arrested in Belhar after police trailed them for weeks. Speaking to News24, Tony said that he was on his way from Johannesburg to Cape Town when he heard the news. When he contacted the police investigating AKA’s case, they gave him feedback. However, he did not divulge what it was.

“We would like to see justice being served and the perpetrators brought to book. He’s gone. Someone killed him. Right now, we are grieving. We are keeping an eye on developments in the news and hoping that something positive will happen …,” the publication quoted Tony as saying.

Police in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape are still tight-lipped about developments in the case. KZN police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda said: “There is no update on the AKA matter at this stage. Police will provide progress on the matter in due course.”
AKA — real name Kiernan Jarryd Forbes — and Tibz were murdered in cold blood on 10 February in Durban when two gunmen opened fire outside Wish on Florida restaurant.

According to Netwerk24, police had been trailing the suspects for weeks. They extracted DNA and fingerprints from a deserted getaway vehicle discovered in Umlazi, KZN, and found that it was linked to a taxi hitman from Empangeni who reportedly has a string of crimes.

To find the notorious hitman, police posed as Sassa agents going door to door to help people register for grants. One of the “applicants” signed up the person of interest, which is how they established that he was already in Cape Town together with his alleged accomplices.

A source that spoke to TimesLIVE also revealed that the CCTV footage from Wish on Florida also played a major role in catching the suspects. The footage that police had in their possession is much clearer than the one leaked on social media.
