SA condemns Israel’s ban on UN chief Antonio Guterres

South Africa is part of a group of more than 100 UN member states, that along with the Africa Union, has signed a statement that condemns Israel’s decision to declare UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, as persona non grata.

The petition was initiated by Chile, after Israel accused Guterres of failing to condemn Iran. These nations expressed what they call a deep concern and condemnation of Israel’s actions. International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola says supporting Guterres was important.

“It is important that the work of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, goes on unhindered by anyone on the planet, in particular member states of the United Nations. He must be able to go anywhere, he must be able to do his job without any fear of any form of hindrance, whether through being declared persona non grata, being allowed access to various countries. So, we see this as very important, as a threat to the work of the United Nations itself,” adds Lamola.
