5 things you should know before going into couple’s therapy

When couples reach a point where the issues between them can no longer be resolved on their own, they turn towards couples therapy as a last resort to make their relationship or marriage work. Couple therapy can indeed be very helpful for those who are on the verge of getting estranged but there are a few things that might come as a shock to couples.

Here are a few things every couple should know before going into couples therapy.

1. Therapy is a commitment
Couples therapy is not a one-time fix. It takes a lot of time, effort, and a willingness to work through issues. It’s important to be committed to the process and willing to put in the necessary work to improve your relationship. If you are not sure about whether you want in the work required to save the relationship, then there’s no point.

2. Therapists are neutral
You can’t expect a therapist to take your side. Couples therapy is not about taking sides or blaming one person for the issues in the relationship. A therapist is a neutral party who helps both partners work through their issues and find solutions that work for both of them.

3. It can get uncomfortable
Going into therapy means bringing up difficult emotions and uncomfortable conversations for the sake of resolving your issues in the marriage. It’s important to be open and honest with your partner and therapist about your feelings, even if it feels uncomfortable at first. Understand that it is the first step towards resolving the issues.

4. There may be homework
Your therapist may give you homework assignments to work on between sessions. These assignments may include things like practising communication skills or spending quality time together. It’s important to follow these assignments to see progress in your relationship. These will help you and your partner to bond with each other on an intimate level.

5. It’s okay to end therapy
Couples therapy may not work for everyone and if it hasn’t worked for you, then it is completely alright. You just need to communicate with your partner and therapist why you feel this isn’t working for you. Remember, the entire point of a couple’s therapy is, to be honest and clear about your feelings.
