KFC

After a busy day, leftover food always comes in handy. But, have you ever thought that leftovers can be harmful too?

Yes, you read it right! As per studies, certain foods and ingredients, when reheated, release harmful compounds or reactivate certain compounds that can cause health threats.

Scroll down to learn about 5 such leftover foods that can make you sick.

1. Eggs

They always contain salmonella, and the gentle heat used to cook eggs often fails to kill the bacteria. Hence, if you eat them later, they might cause some internal harm.

2. Beetroot
They are rich in nitric oxide, and when the foods rich in this compound are reheated, they get converted into nitrites and then to nitrosamines, some of which are known to be carcinogenic.

3. Spinach
It is also rich in nitrate, which, when reheated, turns into carcinogenic nitrosamine and is harmful to the body.

4. Chicken
Like eggs, raw chicken also tends to contain salmonella, and when reheated, it also becomes harmful for the body.

5. Cold-pressed oils
Cold-pressed oils like flaxseed, olive oil, and canola oils are rich in omega-3 fats, but when they are reheated, they can render them unstable and rancid, and therefore, they are not safe. (Image: istock)
