Slovenia 1-1 Denmark #EURO2024

0

Slovenia 1-1 Denmark #EURO2024. Christian Eriksen marked his return to the European Championship with a special goal – but Slovenia responded to draw with Denmark in Stuttgart.

The midfielder, now playing for Manchester United, collapsed on the pitch against Finland in Denmark’s opening match of Euro 2021 and was later fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD).

Eriksen’s return to the Euros began perfectly as he netted his side’s opening goal of this tournament 17 minutes in, firing into the bottom left corner after a smart flick-on from Jonas Wind.

He was a standout performer as Denmark controlled possession in the first half and created more chances to extend their lead.

However Slovenia, who also faced Denmark in qualifying, were backed by vociferous fans in Stuttgart and levelled when Erik Janza’s powerful effort flew past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel with 13 minutes left.

Slovenia’s pressure had been growing in the second half and star man Benjamin Sesko sent a warning sign minutes earlier when he smashed an effort against the post.

Matjaz Kek’s side, who had struggled to contain Eriksen in the first half, could even have snatched a late victory when Andraz Sporar drilled a shot into the side-netting and also volleyed wide.

Chances had already come and gone for Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund, as well as for Eriksen, while Adam Cerin headed wide at the other end.

This result only intensifies a pulsating Group C – which also includes England and Serbia – but will come as a blow to Denmark, who are hoping to go one better than their semi-final achievement in 2021.

Eriksen said this week it had been his “goal” to return to the highest level with Denmark and while he played at the Qatar World Cup in 2022, this felt like an even bigger milestone.

“Everything more than one game is an improvement,” he said as he reflected on what it would mean to play in another Euros for his country.

His strike wrapped up a strong first-half display from the Danes and Slovenia, while dangerous in flashes, had not been allowed to settle.

There were signs of a threat from RB Leipzig striker Sesko, but Slovenia had struggled to get him involved as Eriksen linked well with club team-mate Hojlund, and Wind caused problems out wide.

But as the match wore on, Slovenia showed their strength on set-pieces, testing Denmark’s defence with long throw-ins and dangerous corner routines.

After Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak denied Hojlund from close range, preventing Denmark from extending their lead, the best of the chances fell to Slovenia.

Sporar spurned several of them after getting in behind Denmark’s backline on numerous occasions and, while Sesko had a big presence, he could only rattle the post with a powerful long-range effort.

Eventually, it was Janza who produced the deserved equaliser, thumping his finish first time past a stationary Schmeichel after the ball was flicked on from a corner.

Slovenia travel to Munich next to take on Serbia on Thursday, while Denmark must prepare for a crucial match against group favourites England in Frankfurt.

Spain 3-0 Croatia #EURO2024

Spain 3-0 Croatia #EURO2024. Spain made an emphatic start to their quest to win a fourth European Championship with an impressive victory over Croatia at Olympiastadion Berlin.

First-half goals by Alvaro Morata, Fabian Ruiz and Dani Carvajal essentially settled the outcome before the break and, although Croatia offered little, this must still go down as a statement win for La Roja.

Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal became the youngest player in Euros history when he started the game at the age of 16 years and 338 days, but it was Spain’s most experienced player who gave them the lead, silencing the Croatia fans who poured into Germany’s capital this weekend.

Ruiz collected the ball on the halfway line and had time to look up and thread a perfect pass for Morata to gallop through and slot past Dominik Livakovic for his 36th goal for his country.

After waiting almost half an hour for the breakthrough, Luis de la Fuente’s side took just over three minutes to extend their lead.

This time, it was Ruiz who found the net, beating two men when he was fed the ball on the edge of the area and firing in a shot that nicked off Josip Sutalo on its way past Livakovic.

Croatia came close to pulling a goal back when Josko Gvardiol’s drilled shot beat Unai Simon but also eluded Ante Budimir, who tried to divert it in as it flew wide of the far post.

But Spain continued to attack and wrapped up the points in first-half stoppage time when Yamal’s cross was turned home by Carvajal, who had stayed up following a corner.

A goal for the teenager to go with that assist was all that was missing, with Livakovic superbly denying him from close range early in the second half.

Croatia’s disappointing day got even worse when Bruno Petkovic saw his late penalty saved by Simon and then the video assistant referee disallowed his follow-up for encroachment into the area.

The 2022 World Cup semi-finalists must try to kickstart their Group B campaign when they face Albania in Hamburg on Thursday, the same day Spain face holders Italy in a mouth-watering clash in Gelsenkirchen.

Around 100,000 Croatia fans have come to Berlin this weekend, taking over huge swathes of the city in their distinctive chequered shirts.

They were in party mood before the game started, particularly when their team’s icon Luka Modric emerged to warm up, but they saw little to make them smile once it was under way.

It took them 22 minutes to manage either a shot or a touch in the Spain area and, aside from the penalty, awarded after Rodri tripped Petkovic as he was about to shoot, they forced Simon into only two meaningful saves.

Along with Mateo Kovacic, Modric ended up being substituted after 66 minutes – perhaps to save their legs – with the 38-year-old failing to provide his customary spark.

By then, it was the small pocket of Spain fans inside the Olympiastadion that were making all the noise.

Their captain, Manchester City midfielder Rodri, had said before the tournament that he sees his side as being “serious candidates” at these Euros – and this was a performance that proved they mean business in Germany.

As well as their attacking flair, they were alert and resilient at the back, with their determination underlined by Marc Cucarella’s brilliant block to stop Lovro Majer’s goalbound shot in the second half.

There are sterner tests to come, starting against Italy, but this was a convincing way to begin their campaign.

Hungary Hungary 1-3 Switzerland #EURO2024

Hungary Hungary 1-3 Switzerland #EURO2024. Switzerland battled their way to victory over Hungary as they made a winning start to their Euro 2024 campaign at Cologne Stadium.

Kwadwo Duah justified his surprise inclusion by Murat Yakin as he slotted home his first international goal, before Michel Aebischer doubled Switzerland’s lead on the stroke of half-time.

Barnabas Varga gave Hungary hope with 30 minutes left after the striker guided Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai’s brilliantly-weighted cross beyond Yann Sommer.

Substitute Breel Embolo secured the three points in stoppage time with a lovely lobbed finish over Peter Gulacsi.

Scotland remain bottom of Group A after the 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Germany while Switzerland sit second – behind the tournament hosts.

Yakin’s side gained control of the ball from the off and dominated the play as Hungary created little to nothing in attack during the first 45 minutes.

Duah, who had only played 45 minutes for his nation prior to this, was slipped in brilliantly by Aebischer before finishing beyond Gulacsi in the 12th minute.

On the stroke of half-time, left-wing back Aebischer cut in on his right foot to expertly place a strike beyond the diving Gulacsi from 20-yards.

In the 63rd minute, Varga missed a gilt-edge chance to halve the deficit but he could only direct his header wide of a post.

Minutes later, Varga bravely pounced on Szoboszlai’s ball into the box to halve the deficit.

But, despite being pushed on by thousands of fans, the resurgent Hungarians were unable to find an equaliser.

Embolo, who is only just back from an ACL injury, entered the action in the 74th minute and found the net 19 minutes later, sparking wild celebrations.

The Swiss now face Scotland in this stadium on Wednesday, while Hungary face hosts Germany earlier in the day.

Muvhango star Sydney Ramakuwela forced to expose paternity tests

0

Muvhango actor Sydney Ramakuwela says he insisted on a paternity test when an ex accused him of being a dead-beat father to her 17-year-old son. The fan-favourite actor Sydney Ramakuwela, who plays Mulalo in Muvhango tells Sunday World that he was forced to expose his own paternity tests after a former fling threatened him.

The actor says it all began when an innocent post on Facebook on Sunday about fathers loving their children escalated when a childhood friend accused him of fathering a child with her in 2012.

Sydney Ramakuwela

He was thrilled about the news of being a father to the teenager but demanded a paternity test first. I posted my daughter on Sunday with a funny caption along the lines of tag your man who doesn’t support their child. A lot of people came and commented; it was just a joke,” he said.

“I woke up on Monday and saw a comment that said my son was 17 years old. I didn’t even know what they were eating, like I wasn’t supporting my child. He booked a test in Polokwane, and did the tests with his ex. They then called him and told him that the results are back but couldn’t send the tests to him.

Sydney Ramakuwela

He then went to Auckland Park and collected his results. When he read them, it said he was excluded from the child’s paternity. Ramakuwela also reveals that hi ex accused him of buying the tests and hurled insults when the results came out.

He called Lancet again, and was advised to hold on to his results, and if she wants to dispute, she can order more tests, or she can also open a case against him.

Nomzamo Mbatha mourns the death of student she sponsored

0

Nomzamo Mbatha, the acclaimed South African actress and philanthropist, is currently mourning the tragic death of a student she had sponsored through her foundation.

Taking to Instagram on Friday, the actress shared a video and photo of the young man, whose name is Chibimba. She captioned it with a lengthy note of tribute and words of grief.

Nomzamo Mbatha

” I have been carrying a little pocket of grief this past week. One of our @nomzamo_lighthouse scholars and beneficiaries succumbed to his deepest pain and suffering. The weight of hopelessness far exceeding his will to live.

Nomzamo-Mbatha

“I’m deeply triggered in many ways and my heart aches for his family and closest friends. My heart also aches because there was a promise to see him through to graduation day… “hope you can be there…” and now, here we are. It is most unfair because there was never a bone or air of giving up in his spirit. He galvanised everyone around him and had a self belief and fight in him that was so remarkable.”

Nomzamo-Mbatha

“I am sad that this is not a graduation post. That I don’t get to witness your summit Chibimba. But I am certain, you are free of the pain and worry and burden of this world. Those left behind, are not free of the pain and questions you have left behind. You were far more valuable, far more loved in the physical and there are many many many who would’ve continued to hold your hand in the fight for your life,” Nomzamo added.
