Chelsea 1-1 Nottingham Forest. Chris Wood and Noni Madueke both found the net as Chelsea and Nottingham Forest played out a tactical and fiery 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.
Forest took the lead early in the second half when veteran striker Wood, 32, slid home a finish past Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. The goal came after a well-executed set-piece routine involving James Ward-Prowse and Nikola Milenkovic in the 49th minute.
Chelsea, however, responded swiftly. Just eight minutes later, Madueke equalized, cutting inside on his left foot and curling a shot past Forest’s defense and keeper. It was the fourth time Madueke had bested Forest left-back Alex Moreno with his quick footwork and direct running.
The match was disrupted when Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White limped off injured in the second half, casting doubt over his participation in England’s upcoming international fixtures. His frustration was visible as he gingerly made his way off the pitch.
Things went from bad to worse for Forest when Ward-Prowse was sent off in the second half for a deliberate handball to prevent a Nicolas Jackson counter-attack. The midfielder had already been booked earlier for a tactical foul on Chelsea star Cole Palmer, leading to a second yellow card and his dismissal.
Madueke also appeared to suffer an injury following a melee that began when Forest’s Neco Williams pushed Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella into manager Enzo Maresca. The winger had to be helped off the pitch, unable to put weight on one of his legs, further adding to Chelsea’s injury concerns.
Despite being a man down, Forest defended valiantly as Chelsea brought on their star-studded substitutes, including Christopher Nkunku, Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Pedro Neto, in search of a winner. Palmer had two chances well saved by Forest keeper Matz Sels, while Felix headed an effort wide in stoppage time.
Late in the match, both sides came close to snatching victory. Williams forced a brilliant save from Sanchez with a curling effort for Forest, while Nkunku’s diving header at close range was superbly stopped by Sels to maintain the stalemate.
Chelsea defenders Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana received their fifth yellow cards of the season, meaning they will miss the next league match against Liverpool. Chelsea also face a £25,000 fine for accumulating six yellow cards, and both clubs may be charged with failing to control their players after chaotic scenes late in the game.
The Blues’ five-game winning streak came to an end, though they remain unbeaten in the league since the season opener. Forest, meanwhile, extended their unbeaten away run to six matches, their longest streak on the road since 1995.
Interim England manager Lee Carsley will have concerns after two of his former under-21 stalwarts, Gibbs-White and Madueke, were forced off with injuries. Gibbs-White, in particular, looked in severe pain and is unlikely to be fit for England’s upcoming Nations League fixtures against Greece and Finland. There are also questions about the fitness of Chelsea’s Levi Colwill, who was substituted after pointing to his hip.
Forest have made impressive strides this season under Nuno Espirito Santo. Their performance at Stamford Bridge was a showcase of everything the Premier League has to offer, as they combined tactical discipline with physicality to compete against a top-tier Chelsea side.
Once known for sitting deep under previous manager Steve Cooper, Forest have evolved into a team capable of pressing high and retaining possession, while still maintaining one of the best defensive records in the league—having conceded fewer goals than Manchester City.
Ola Aina’s one-on-one defending was outstanding, while center-backs Milenkovic and Murilo stood firm, and goalkeeper Matz Sels continued to impress since his arrival. Even after Ward-Prowse’s red card, Forest executed a masterclass in defending, counter-attacking, and time management, with Neco Williams and Jota Silva both coming close to stealing a late victory for the visitors.
