Julianne Moore Shares Her Bag of Beauty Tricks

Julianne Moore has every reason to feel like she’s running on empty, but if she is, she’s not showing it. Fresh off a late-night appearance at the Gotham Awards in New York City, and recently back from Savannah (where she was filming the romantic drama May December with Natalie Portman), Moore isn’t interested in rushing through this interview as if it’s just a box to check off on her busy schedule. Instead, she’s interested in making small talk, followed by having an honest conversation about beauty, skincare, and what it really means to be confident.

That authenticity is why she was the perfect choice to unveil Hourglass Beauty’s new campaign for its Unlocked Satin Crème Lipstick, a vegan, cruelty-free lipstick with 20 high-impact shades and a universal red, as well as to promote the brand’s ongoing mission to support animal welfare.

But here’s a shocking reality that makes this launch so essential, and why Moore wanted to spread the message: The pigment usually used to make red lipstick comes from carmine, which is the industry’s go-to red pigment produced from thousands of crushed cochineal bugs. Awful, right? Hourglass was the first beauty brand to develop a patent-pending, vegan replacement for carmine, which made it super easy for the Oscar winner to endorse.

“I was originally like, “What?” Moore says when she heard about the awful practice involving female insects. “Especially for something that’s not a need. I mean, lipstick is a want; it’s not a need. So it’s great that they found this formulation, and it’s also a really great color. I have a hard time with red; sometimes they’re too blue, sometimes they’re too orangey, but this one, called Red 0, is a really, really good one.”
Speaking of “the job,” Moore needs that long-lasting, moisturizing lipstick to take her from early morning to late night given her hectic 2023 press and filming schedule. She has the movie, When You Finish Saving the World, written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg, and costarring Stranger Things’s Finn Wolfhard, out on January 20. Then, on February 10, Sharper, a wildly twisty thriller she produced and stars in, alongside John Lithgow, Sebastian Stan, and Justice Smith, opens in theaters. (It will then premiere on Apple TV+ on February 17.) In between it all, she heads to London for another project, all while spreading the word about the importance of Hourglass’s newest launch. “So it’s kind of crazy…but that’s nice, right?” she says.
