Why Billie Eilish Grew up With Anger Towards Her Body

Billie Eilish has spoken candidly about her relationship with her body in a recent interview, and revealed that she once had a lot of ‘anger toward [her] body’ due to a growth plate injury that stopped her dance career in its tracks.

The seven-time Grammy Award winner, who recently celebrated her 21st birthday, made the comments as part of an interview with Vogue US – for whom she is the January cover star alongside a group of fellow climate activists.
As part of her cover interview, singer recalled her struggles with her body as a teenager: ‘Going through my teenage years of hating myself and all that stupid s**t, a lot of it came from my anger toward my body, and how mad I was at how much pain it’s caused me, and how much I’ve lost because of things that happened to it.’
Aged 13, the singer had an injury in her hip and was diagnosed with hypermobility, a condition which derailed her dance career – but ultimately led her to turn her focus to music.

Eventually, she learned to accept and love her body: ‘I felt like my body was gaslighting me for years,’ Eilish told the publication. ‘I had to go through a process of being like, “My body is actually me. And it’s not out to get me.”‘

This is not the first time Eilish has spoken candidly about her relationship with her body over the years. The singer was previously known for only ever wearing baggy clothes in public in order to detract attention from her body, and in 2020 released a short film entitled ‘Not My Responsibility’ to call out body shaming. Eilish has also opened up about her own struggles with disordered eating and mental health.
