Zozibini Tunzi has been brought into the conversation surrounding the image reigning Miss SA, Shudufhadzo Musiḓa, has been portraying of herself, with some claiming that the hate stems from tribalism.
Zozibini Tunzi has unwarrantedly been added to the drama surrounding Miss South Africa 2020, Shudufhadzo Musiḓa, with many pinning the women against one another. The reigning Miss Universe has been considered one of South Africa’s most celebrated flagbearers, following her crowning in 2019.
South Africans have praised her throughout her reign, as she has often spoken out about societal issues, and has even publically called out President Cyril Ramaphosa for his alleged failure to address the issue of gender-based violence in the country.
This is in contrast of the perception the public has of Shudufhadzo, who many believe has been using her platform for personal popularity, rather than to fulfill her duty as Miss South Africa. Social media users have also begun comparing the attire worn by both women, with Zozibini being praised for her conservative dressing.
Whilst the majority of the public has sided with Zozibini as the better Miss South Africa, many have noted that she only garnered that respect when she was crowned Miss Universe. Some South Africans believe that both Shudufhadzo and Zozibini have been victims of tribalism, as they are both not part of dominant tribes.
One Twitter user stated, “Zozi was only praised when she held the Miss Universe title, before that, she was bashed and called ugly.” Another user commented, “I remember the same reaction when Zozi was crowned and then she went on to silence them by wining Miss Universe and today, they are all cheering her name. This Miss SA will also achieve big things for SA!”
