Uber driver Thokozisa Ziqubu bags a role on Durban Gen

AFTER numerous failed attempts in auditions for TV productions, actor Thokozisa Ziqubu decided to join the transport industry in 2019 by operating an Uber.

Just as he was still struggling, the 27-year-old from Imbali in Pietermaritzburg, KZN midlands, didn’t believe his luck when a casting agent from Durban Gen called to tell him he had landed a role.

Thokozisa is one of the three new cast members who joined the second season of the telenovela, playing the role of Dr Bhengu.

Speaking to Daily Sun about the call that changed his life, he said he cried while working when he found out he got the job.

“I’ve never cried so much. I was driving a passenger when I received the call,” said Thokozisa.

He joined Uber after relocating to Joburg with the hope of finding greener pastures. And, Durban Gen rescued him.

“I had to risk my life and get into the Uber business, knowing very well that it was not safe. But, I had no choice because jobs, especially in our industry, are scarce. I had to do something to survive. I have been robbed two times while driving Uber, where my cellphones and cash were taken. My life was in danger. But, I thank my ancestors and God that Durban Gen rescued me,” he added.

Thokozisa has acted in Mzansi Wethu productions including Ngithande and Amathafa, but he said Durban Gen was his big break.

He said Dr Bhengu was manipulative, unlike him.

“He wants to be loved by his superiors, but he does that by gossiping about his colleagues. What I like about him is that he goes after everything he wants,” said Thokozisa.
