The Umbrella Academy Season 2

Movie review: The Umbrella Academy Season 2

Five warned his family that using his powers to escape from Vanya’s 2019 apocalypse was risky. Well, he was right – the time jump scatters the siblings in time in and around Dallas, Texas. Over a three year period. Starting in 1960. Some, having been stuck in the past for years, have built lives and moved on, certain they’re the only ones who survived. Five is the last to land, smack dab in the middle of nuclear doomsday. Now the Umbrella Academy must find a way to reunite, figure out what caused doomsday, put a stop to it, and return to the present timeline to stop that other apocalypse.

WHAT WE THOUGHT:

The Umbrella Academy is back! It’s been a long wait – 532 days to be exact but it was absolutely worth it.

The Umbrella Academy falls under a trope that I dearly love – that of Found Family. The love and loyalty that comes with a family that is built, rather than created by blood relation, and in Season Two the siblings choose each other when they very easily could have walked away, the way we found them at the start of Season One.

At the start of Season Two, the Hargreeves siblings are spread across time in Dallas as a result of the time jump with Five at the end of the previous season. And it seems the apocalypse followed them. The siblings come together in various pairings for the first half of the season as Five tries to get the band back together to avert this new apocalypse, but it’s like herding cats.

Everyone has their own agenda and ties to the new lives they’ve created for themselves — even ghost Ben, who is entirely dependent on Klaus but gets to exert some agency this season. We get a lot more of Ben this season, which is great because his banter with Klaus is one of the best things about the show. Seeing him interact with his siblings, who are not Klaus, is so heart warming.

Aiden Gallagher carries a lot of this season on his 16-year-old shoulders. His performance as crotchety old Five stuck in a teenage body is both brilliant and hilarious. He’s so angry for a tiny human and for someone who is fifth in a list of seven, Five takes on the leadership of this band of misfits pretty easily. Why is Luther even Number One? He is as dumb as a bag of rocks and has zero leadership skills.

I like that Luther apologised to Vanya for his part in causing the first apocalypse, and I feel like he was also apologising to the viewers who were mad about this for 532 days (I’ve been mad about it for that long).

It’s obvious that it would happen, but it was good to see The Umbrella Academy come together in the end nonetheless, because it’s the way they come together that makes it so satisfying. I love seeing Vanya as part of the family and team. In Season One, she was very much an outsider and seeing her mend her relationships with them gave me tingles.

There’s so much that happens this season that this show really should be watched a few episodes at a time so that you can take it all in. The Commission is still a major problem for the Reginald Hargreeves, and there are also a slew of new characters, relationships and dramas involving them to contend with. Notable mentions to Yusuf Gatewood (Raymond Chestnut) and Kevin Rankin (Elliot) who are two fantastic new additions to Season Two.

The thing is, whenever time travel and timelines are involved, things are never straightforward. There will always, always be consequences. You’d think that Five would understand this (and shame, he tries his best with what he’s working with), but he makes some very rookie mistakes not thinking about the consequence, especially when it comes to meeting their father.

The final scene in the series makes complete sense when you think about what kind of man Reginald Hargreeves is, even more so when you’re given even more information about him in his younger days.

Season Two of Umbrella Academy was certainly worth the wait. If you have binge-watched this in a day or two, I’d highly recommend going back and taking your time with a second watch.
