Lady Zamar opens up about losing her voice and undergoing different surgeries

Singer Lady Zamar has revealed that she spent a year in and out of hospital.  The songstress (who recently released her new album titled Rainbow) said she lost her voice before recording the album. I lost it coming off the creation of the project, Monarch, and into 2020. My vocal cords were damaged due to swelling and a lot of discomfort. Zamar, real name Yamikani Janet Banda, said she had to undergo surgery.

“I was in a position where I had to be quiet and not speak for about a year and a half. I needed to get physiotherapy and regain my voice. Then I did three years of vocal training and learning to sing again and learn to take care of my voice.

“I have been in doctors’ rooms in 2021 and 2022 and spent the rest of the time working on getting my voice again. After her vocal surgery, Zamar revealed that she had two other operations after that and had to get her septum fixed.

“I removed my tonsils to stop me from getting infections. Later on, I suffered from a kidney problem and had to be hospitalised close to a week. It has been a lot.

“I did a lot of therapy. I saw a psychiatrist, psychologist and a physiotherapist for a year and a half and have consistent exercises that I do on a daily basis. During that time, the Love is Blind hitmaker was a victim of mob intimidation and cyberbullying on social media following the rape allegations she levelled against her ex-boyfriend, Sjava, in 2017.

According to Zamar, the Ikhandlela singer sexually assaulted her while they were together at a hotel in Limpopo. The pair were in a relationship at the time.

In 2018, the Collide singer opened a case against Sjava – who denied the rape allegations and filed an application for the matter to be heard in the high court.

“As a final statement on this matter, I write to you as my colleagues, business partners, peers and supporters to inform you that I will not be engaging on matters of assault and abuse levelled against me on social media or any other platform.

“I have instituted legal proceedings in the high court of SA, and as such, the matter is now sub judice,” he said in his statement.

In 2020, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) declined to prosecute as it believed “the facts or evidence do not support a successful prosecution,” the SowetanLIVE reported.
