Bongani Zungu (28) found himself in hot water with authorities and his club last week after he was identified as one of five Rangers players who had flouted Scotland’s Covid-19 regulations by attending a house party.
The Bafana Bafana star, who is on loan from Ligue 2 side Amiens, was subsequently removed from the squad in order to self-isolate and no longer appears to have a future with the Scottish giants beyond this season.
Rangers have the option to sign the former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder on a permanent deal for €2.7m (R48 million) but Gerrard agreed with suggestions that the possibility of the club exercising that clause had all but disappeared.
“I think that would be fair to say, yes,” the former England international said. “That will take care of itself and we’ll move forward with the players who have remained professional and want to be part of a successful team.
“We spoke as a group and I explained the situation to them. We’re at such an important time of the season with the fixtures coming up that we can’t be worrying about it or letting our focus slide.”
