Dingaani Thobela to be laid to rest this week

Legendary boxer Dingaani Thobela, who died last week at the age of 57, will be buried on Thursday. Popularly known as “The Rose of Soweto”, Thobela is a former world title holder in different divisions and became the WBA lightweight title holder after he beat the more fancied opponent, American Tony ‘The Tiger’ Lopez, in Sun City Resort in 1993.

A memorial service will be held tomorrow at Arena Holdings offices in Parktown in Johannesburg between 12 and 3pm. Family spokesperson Eddy Mutungutungu said they are expecting those in the sports fraternity, Ministers of Sports, Arts and Culture Zizi Kodwa, and celebrities to attend the memorial service. “The Rose will be buried at Heroes Acre at Westpark Cemetery on Thursday,” Mutungutungu added.

His family is still waiting for autopsy results, they suspect that he died from a heart attack. According to a source, the family doesn’t suspect any foul play. “It is likely that he died from heart attack also because of the position he was discovered in,” said a source. Thobela’s ex-wife, Sandra Thobela, who is based in Spain arrived in the country last week Thursday with their two children Ntombi and Dingaan Junior to attend the funeral.
