South Africa’s upcoming general elections will be declared by President Cyril Ramaphosa, after the State of the Nation Address (SONA).
Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya made the announcement in Parliament, ahead of SONA. Many have predicted that the President will make the announcement during the SONA on Thursday evening.
The Electoral Commission is done with voter registration drives and the focus now shifts to the Union Buildings for the elections to be declared. South Africans still have an opportunity to register to vote online or at IEC offices until the proclamation of the election date.
Magwenya says it’s not true that the elections will be declared during the President’s last SONA of the sixth democratic administration.
“President Cyril Ramaphosa will announce the elections date within 15 days after the State of the Nation (SONA). Thereafter the date will be proclaimed,”
Meanwhile, political analyst Professor Lesiba Teffo says President Ramaphosa has failed to live up to expectations. He says Ramaphosa has been indecisive and many don’t know what he stands for.
“He didn’t live up to expectations, I think in a small way he should be disappointed in himself, what he has reached, a stage where people are assessing him in the manner he does, even his closest allies probably whispered in his ears, can you up your pace and be decisive.
