His untimely death came as a shock to the media industry, with many coming out to celebrate and pay tribute to the radio legend. Mourners at the memorial service described Mabena as a selfless man whose character and wit won hearts both on-air and when the microphones were off. They said that the iconic broadcaster managed to achieve more in his career than what many achieved in a lifetime.
Media personality Melanie Bala was Mabena’s co-host on the music TV show, _Studio Mix, _for much of the earlier parts of his illustrious career.
“Bob made it his personal responsibility every week after the show to make sure that I got home safely,” Bala said.
Fellow veteran broadcaster Nothemba Madumo paid tribute to the icon through a heartfelt poem on friendship.“We are not lovers because of the love we make. But the love we have,” she said. Madumo also remembered Mabena as having an unmistakable touch.
“We were all made to feel special and the only kind of special as friends of his. Everyone here, and probably everyone watching, believe the same thing too,” she said.
