BAFANA Bafana’s quest to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup is back on track.
They put themselves in a strong position in their group with an impressive 1-0 win over Ghana at the FNB Stadium.
Youngster Bongokuhle Hlongwane was the hero for Bafana as he netted the winner late in the second half.
The result puts Hugo Broos’ young team at the top of Group G with four points from two matches.
Their 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe on Friday, now looks like an even better result after they followed it up with a convincing home win over the Black Stars.
Broos made two changes to the team that faced the Warriors with Ethan Brooks and highly-rated forward, Hlongwane, replacing Luther Singh and Gift Links in the starting team.
Black Stars coach, Charles Akonnor, was forced to make some changes to his team after several of his stars couldn’t make the trip to Mzansi due to Covid-19 regulations.
South Africa is one of the countries on the “red-list” – destinations that have been classified as high risk by many European countries.
As a result, some of Ghana’s players currently based in England and France were forced to miss out to avoid going into quarantine upon their return to Europe.
Bafana showed no respect to the slightly weakened Black Stars in the first half and even had the ball in the back of the net through Tau, but he was adjudged to be offside.
Makgopa was the next Bafana player to come close to scoring, as he was guilty of missing a gilt-edged chance at the beginning of the second half.
Maritzburg United’s Hlongwane wouldn’t let his opportunity go to waste, slotting past Richard Ofori in the 83rd minute.
Bafana will resume their qualifiers next month when they travel to face Ethiopia, who face Zimbabwe this afternoon.
