Zimbabwe warriors and Kenya pulled out of AFCON qualifiers

Zimbabwe Warriors and Kenya have officially been pulled out of next month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, after having failed to have their respective Fifa ban lifted.

Therefore, Bafana Bafana are left in a three-team group with Morocco and Liberia on qualifiers that are due to start on 1 June.

Zimbabwe were scheduled to open qualifiers against Liberia on 9 June, while Bafana will face Morocco away on the same day.

This would mean the Lone Stars of Liberia will have a bye.

The African controlling football body had included Zim and Kenya in the official draw earlier in April “on condition that the suspension must be lifted two weeks before their first match day”.

“Kenya and Zimbabwe, suspended for political interference, have not yet met the criteria required by the Fifa Congress as a prerequisite for lifting their suspension,” Caf said in a statement.

Putting it officially on record, it is confirmed that the two associations “Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) will be considered losers and eliminated from the competition”.

“Groups C and K will be composed only of three teams and the order of the matches will be maintained in accordance with the match schedule that has been communicated to the teams after the draw,” continued Caf.

This should make life easier for Hugo Broos’ Bafana as their group winner and runner-up teams will qualify to the final tournament in Ivory Coast, only one team in the group eliminated.

Broos has since announced a preliminary squad for the qualifiers but has since come under huge criticism for having excluded Andile Jali from his team.

Jali was nominated in five categories for PSL Awards scheduled for this weekend.

Broos is expected to announce his final squad this week and give direction as to where they hold their training camp.
